Ode to Fisk Jubilee Singers: The name for my hometown/city “Music City” was first given a nickname for Nashville based Fisk University Jubilee Singers in the late 1800’s. Queen Victoria traveled to hear their tour, and they drew praise from Mark Twain. They were invited by President Ulysses S. Grant to perform at the White House. They put Nashville on the music map while breaking racial barriers after the Civil War. Queen Victoria was so in awe of the group she stated that they must be from the “Music City”. Music City was initially dubbed for Nashville because of Gospel Music….not Country Music.
