Case Brought by Nonhuman Rights Project to Determine if 'Happy' the Elephant is Imprisoned ‘Person’

Advocates with the Nonhuman Rights Project have sued the Bronx Zoo, claiming ‘Happy,’ an Asian elephant, deserves the same rights as a ‘person.’

The group says Happy is being illegally confined and want her freed, arguing that elephants are cognitively complex and autonomous. They say Happy has passed a test of self-awareness and deserves the same right to freedom as humans.

The zoo says Happy is, in fact, happy and well-maintained at the zoo.

  1. Happy’s lawyer here! Five of the most world-renowned elephant scientists have arrested and were unrebutted that Happy would thrive in a sanctuary. A California court called zoo directors “delusional” for contending an elephant is better off in a zoo than a sanctuary. The science and the common law weigh in favor of Happy’s much deserved freedom! Thank you for covering our case!
