  1. Sharp frets are a modern issue unfortunately. It was never something you needed to take care of when I first started playing, but now it seems they don't seem to let wood dry out long enough before building with it. Now half the instruments I've bought in the last 5 years have this issue. But yeah, I use a super fine nail polisher (not the rough side!) to file them off. You might need to tape off the side of the neck first to avoid any scratches. It's a couple of minutes work and you're done. Actually roasted necks should reduce this problem and you're seeing them more in budget instruments as well now which is great.
Shimming I was worried about at first having never done it, but I've done it twice now, once on a cheap guitar and once on one of my own builds and it works! I bought wood shims just to raise the angle by a degree or so and that line out to the bridge will means you can raise the saddles and adjust them like they were supposed to be.

  2. I have improved many guitars just like this, using plastic strips mostly, but for some added insurance against an eventual rising tongue at the last frets, use angled or wedge shaped full neck pocket shims, that ensure even contact in the neck pocket.

I've seen many guitars where the adjustable factory neck angle mechanism, with a small contact point, or even a thin partial shim only at the end of the pocket, had eventually caused the neck to rise and buzz at the last few frets.

This is a fine solution, but just monitor it and don't store it for years unless you have full contact shims installed.

  3. Personally I'm glad that someone actually has done this… A video that tells people especially beginners that sometimes they can fix a Cheap Guitar 🎸 father simply… I have seen a few YouTubers Slamming certain budget guitars from China and the problem was it wasn't intonated Which typically is a Truss Rod Adjustment & or Saddles needing to be adjusted all of which are ROUTINE MAINTAINCE ISSUES… Understanding Guitar Setups is Paramount to Successfully playing guitar 🎸… I believe some people just are anti Chipson guitars… But most American Made Guitars have Chinese parts. Etc . Or other countries making & or assembly.. Cheers 🥃🥃 🍻 🎸🎶🎶

  4. Old business cards, old gift cards, credit cards even picks make good shims. Of course it depends on how much you want to shim the neck. What surprises me is how many people there are that have played professionally for decades (like MY LIFETIME… I'm 52) that either don't know how or don't want to mess things up with simple fixes. I get it in some ways as you don't want to screw things up in an irreversible manner and yet, this kinda stuff doesn't qualify as irreversible.

  5. Quite frankly, I am AMAZED that you managed to get a Boya & Ziqi guitar that was this good! I’d love it if all Boya & Ziqi guitars were as good as yours was here, but given their track record up to this point, I have SERIOUS doubts. Nearly ALL other reviews I’ve ever seen out there of Boya & Ziqi guitars (including one of this particular model) have been BAD & BAD, and not JUST because of common and easily fixable issues like sharp fret ends or a bad neck angle. Nearly all other reviews up to this point have found far more serious issues like sloppy neck pocket routing, badly fitting switch handles, SERIOUS flaws in the finish, and all around BAD craftsmanship of a nature and consistency that suggests systemic problems in their factory. Therefore, unless something has drastically changed, I recommend staying away from this brand.

  6. Years ago, I had to shim the neck pocket on my Strat. I used a couple thin strips of Blue Painters Tape, the same shape as what you used. So simple, and the results were dramatic and effective. This is a great fix every guitarist should know for bolt on neck guitars.

  7. Maybe just the video angle, but the High E looks closer to the fretboard edge than the low E. If true, the assembly and QC is suspect in yet another way. Might be excusable on a $69 Glarry, but not at this price.

  8. OMG , they just have to get a better QC, for that price you have a lot of fucking good guitars, even without the things you had to do, not everyone is able to do that stuff… and D'Addario strings …wow but if you don't like them or another gauge, I don't buy guitars for their strings…
