Bogdan’s First Ever Departure Out of Duluth After Weeks in Port

Making her first departure at 12:15am under the midnight sun: a full moon so bright it made the sky slightly blue, the saltie Bogdan! She had an interesting visit to the Twin Ports, sitting at anchor for several days then starting off at Superior’s Vittera grain elevator where she partially loaded, but then orders changed. She then had to unload, which took over a week, then moved to the Riverland Ag elevator on the Duluth side before finally departing after over 3 weeks in town. Clearly relieved to get under day, her crew gave a nice salute despite the late hour! She departed for Gibraltar.

Built in 2021, Bogdan is one of a dozen vessels built since 2020 in a massive expansion of the Bulgarian Navibulgar company’s Great Lakes capable fleet. Another 10 ships are expected to completed in the next 3 years. Measuring 623ft long with a carrying capacity of 32,000 tons in 6 cargo holds and featuring 3 deck cranes, she is a capable vessel with the ability to carry a wide range of bulk cargoes. Her name is Slavic for “Given By God”.

Hopefully the first of many visits!

  1. Sweet video! I saw this ship in Port Huron on the 20th, they didn't salute but it was nice seeing a ship I haven't seen before. Out of all the new salties being built for lakes service, this class is my personal favorite. I also really love the new Polsteam ships being constructed, I have yet to see one of those ones.

  2. This is just beautiful. Moonlight at midnight on a quiet and deserted pier. City lights glowing like candles…and ambient sounds of the night. You cant get any better than this, Jonathan.
    Thank you for being there…
