  1. That sounds like this story was inspired by one that I heard from Lindybeige (great channel if you're into militaryish history and history in general, and the color beige) about british officers not ducking.

I can't recall half of the quote, but an officer nonchalantly walking through the fire to an enlisted calling out to him to duck replied " … and the men don't like it …" – and I'm not sure whether it was the first or the second half. 😀

Some talk of Alexander, and some of Hercules

Of Hector and Lysander, and such great names as these.

But of all the world's brave heroes, there's none that can compare.

With a tow, row, row, row, row, row, to the British Grenadiers.

Those heroes of antiquity ne'er saw a cannon ball,

Or knew the force of powder to slay their foes withal.

But our brave boys do know it, and banish all their fears,

With a tow, row, row, row, row, row, for the British Grenadiers.

Whene'er we are commanded to storm the palisades,

Our leaders march with fusees, and we with hand grenades.

We throw them from the glacis, about the enemies' ears.

With a tow, row, row, row, row, row, for the British Grenadiers.

And when the siege is over, we to the town repair.

The townsmen cry, "Hurrah, boys, here comes a Grenadier!

Here come the Grenadiers, my boys, who know no doubts or fears!

Then sing tow, row, row, row, row, row, for the British Grenadiers.

Then let us fill a bumper, and drink a health of those

Who carry caps and pouches, and wear the loopèd clothes.

May they and their commanders live happy all their years.

With a tow, row, row, row, row, row, for the British Grenadiers.

  3. Halfway down the trail to Hell,
    In a shady meadow green
Are the Souls of all dead Troopers camped,
    Near a good old-time canteen.
    And this eternal resting place
    Is known as Fiddlers’ Green.

Marching past, straight through to Hell
    The Infantry are seen.
    Accompanied by the Engineers,
    Artillery and Marines,
For none but the shades of Cavalrymen
    Dismount at Fiddlers’ Green.

Though some go curving down the trail
    To seek a warmer scene.
No Trooper ever gets to Hell
    Ere he’s emptied his canteen.
And so rides back to drink again
    With friends at Fiddlers’ Green.

And so when man and horse go down
    Beneath a saber keen,
Or in a roaring charge of fierce melee
    You stop a bullet clean,
And the hostiles come to get your scalp,
    Just empty your canteen,
And put your pistol to your head
    And go to Fiddlers’ Green.

[It should be noted that all that have been assigned or attached to the 1st Cavalry Division are Cavalry Troopers regardless of their branch assignment or military occupation skill and are therefore authorized to rest at Fiddler’s Green.]
