Atari 400 Mini Retail Edition – Unboxing, Gameplay and First Thoughts

My Atari 400 Mini is finally here! So excited to open it up and start having a play. I unbox the unit, compare it to my original Atari 400 unit, and then plug it in and have a quick play of each of the included games.

  1. You mention some people don't like how easily you can accidentally hit the wrong button on the controller, Tony as well as in your conclusion you brought it up yourself. Is it that bad? The controller is half the reason I was interested in this mini but now I that I hear so many issues with it (Metal Jesus also brought it up) I might not get it after all. Is it really that bad?

  2. Nice to see the item was well packaged for delivery, viewed a US based reviewer and theirs was sent in a plastic bag and their box was NOT mint prior to unwrapping, your box seems to have ended it's journey, in not 100% the effort at final stage seems to have been done. Hmm, I am thinking a lot of collectors will want these, so shipping boxes, so the customer gets them mint, including the box, in the best condition box, would be nice, I think?

Played Star Raiders 2, on the ZX Spectrum, back in the day, a great game, a type of game that the ZX Spectrum can do very well. Didn't know the connection to the 'Last Starfighter" game, or until more recently, the actual movie; Imo, the movie, is a total modern classic, i really enjoyed watching it, yet another movie I could have watched, as a kid but missed.

Great review of the product, hope my ramblings are not too annoying.

  3. I'm still in 2 minds whether I should buy one or not. I can't believe you've never heard of the Gamesmen in Sydney before, they've been around for a long time. I used to buy Atari 2600 games from them back in the mid 80's.

  4. This extended gameplay video is very nice, certainly shows that the built-in joystick works pretty well. It has received some harsh early reviews, so this does help.

    Great video overall, thanks!

PS: Get back to playing MULE! Select Tournament mode, skip the training modes, figure it out, you’ll love it.

PS2: Install MULE and Seven Cities onto your USB drive, as the installed versions either suffer from graphics glitches or have cut out content. Hope that helps.

  5. The Gamesmen have been around for years they are the ones that did the HES games for the 2600. They also had the distribution rights to the Intellivision in Australia after the Mattel version the INTV one. I was one of their only resellers in Victoria. Sabastion is one of the guys in the logo he was the one I was dealing with, really nice guy. The other partner was sadly killed in an armed robbery at the store.
