This is just a theory that I like to entertain. I have tried to imagine the logic behind the terracotta figures. And, it would seem logical to me, if these were meant to accompany the Emperor into the afterlife, then simple, hollow representations wouldn't do. Since the 8000 Soldiers and 670 horses would be too difficult to embalm or mummify, then the only way to actually send them would be to cremate them and place their ashes in the tomb, maybe in a special chamber or ceremonial containers, near the Emperor, himself. The terracotta bodies would serve as their new celestial abodes, once the journey was complete.
