In 2001, the United States decided to fight against the Taliban who had taken control of a large part of Afghanistan. A small group of 12 special forces were sent into the country and met with the northern alliance, a group of different tribes who had been resisting the Taliban for a long time. To make headway in the mountainous landscape, the US soldiers used a more traditional means of transportation, horses. Despite little preparation time and few resources, they built up a powerful army in the months that followed and joined the Afghans in defeating the numerically superior Taliban. Unfortunately, the Afghanistan mission ended in disaster, but the iconic image of the modern elite warrior riding into battle on an Afghan horse has gone down in history forever.
