Aboriginal Emu Tracks (Panaramitee) – Cave Engravings – Kulnura, NSW

I’m not sure why, but aboriginal engravings in caves are a lot less frequent compared to painted images, so it’s always extra special to come across a cave that has engravings on its walls.

This cave (which researchers have labelled as “Emu Tracks 2”) features 15 engravings of emu tracks, engravings of the type which are often described as Panaramitee (a style in which the represented motifs are mostly tracks), often thought to be more than 6,000 years old. Extensive research was done on the artefacts excavated from this cave, which were found to be around 3500 years old.

Due to the lack of sunlight and the dampness not all the engraved tracks are clearly visible, some have faded somewhat over time, but considering that it’s likely they were created a couple of thousand years ago they have stood the test of time very well. Although this cave is not actually that far from a road, it’s in a very secluded, hidden away spot surrounded by dense foilage, so it’s well protected in that sense too.

This cave and its engravings are kind of a mini-version of the Emu Cave in the Blue Mountains : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pXUaEehGqQk

What am I watching here?

This channel has been created to promote, educate and celebrate Australia’s ancient history i.e. its aboriginal history and specifically its related archaeology. This channel will feature aboriginal engravings, rock art, stone arrangements and ancient ceremonial sites.

I’m an ancient history lover, and am fascinated with ancient sites all around the world, everything from imperial tombs in Japan and China, to Stone Henge, Avebury and the like in the British Isles, but like many Australians I never paid much attention to the ancient history in our own backyard. That all changed when I started to research and visit aboriginal sites here in Australia, and this channel is an extension of that interest.

  1. Thank you for letting everyone know there is a place like this in Australia. I think the people who leave this stuff know that you like their stuff and it's going to be really nice to have it delivered to everyone.
