Today I’ve picked five racing games I’ve spent a lot of time playing over the years and asked Andy from Big Car to provide some history on the star of the game.

  1. I always loved how the early outrun games used a mirror car model to denote if you were steering left or right. you can tell by the little horse logo on the back and as it switches sides with each turn from left to right. It made it easier to program the game because they didnt have to redraw the car model for each turn, just flip it. Later outrun games (like outrun 2) they had to program the car model at various angles of a turn in order to maintain the horse logo only being in one direction. Now, since they no longer have the ferrari license, Sega has changed the logo on the back of the car into a bird (as seen in the switch/3ds versions) which is the same shape regardless of turning left or right.

  2. Excellent collaboration videos 🙂 Talking about Lotus, a while back found Lotus Challenge game for PS2 from flea market and I also have the Lotus Trilogy box for Amiga. Additionally few other games seen in this video, like Out Run for Amiga and PC.
In Forza Horizon 4 (Xbox One) there was even one Out Run themed event which was fun to drive.

  3. When Playstation came up I thought either Gran Turismo or Ridge Racer. I can't recall if either of those games have a car type which they are known for though, as in keeping with the video title. Years since I've played them. Was it Mazda MX5s in Ridge Racer?

  4. Great episode! I love the idea of mixing two topics together like videogames and cars. I love retrocomputers and i love the cars of that era too. I would choose an Peugeot 106 Rally from Gran Turismo 2. Gran Turismo 1 was a game changer. Such a great game!

  5. Outrun was a favourite of mine, we had the full sit down hydraulic version in our local arcade (Swanage). I would regularly pull huge crowds that would watch me drive to the "Sea Breeze" sound track.

  6. This was excellent, you had me glued to the screen. It would be great to do a series of collaborative videos like this with other subjects rather than cars, like planes, sport personalities, film tie ins, etc.

  7. Being primarily an Asian growing up in Asia, supercars have came and went through the years. However, the one car that stood out to me is the Toyota AE86 Apex Trueno, which was made popular by the anime Initial D during my college years.

My top three picks would be:
    Pontiac Firebird Trans-Am
    The DeLorean
    Toyota AE86 Apex Trueno.

I even have a fantasy car that had the front of a Trueno, the cabin of a Firebird and the back of a DeLorean.

Footnote: The Nissan Fairlady Z gained popularity a few years after I left college. I don't know why.

  8. The Testarossa was a boxer (flat) 12. Not a V12. The engine was largely a lift across from the previous 512BB, so named because it was the Berlinetta Boxer.

In watching Big Car, it is strewn with inaccuracies. Sorry, but it just is.

  9. If I could choos Andy to make a documentary I think I'd choose some obscure one-off cars from for example Need For Speed series – the Italdesign Scighera and whatnot. Great video, awesome colllab!

  10. For me the Standout racing games & cars from my childhood are the following: Outrun-Testarossa- (1986) (The 1st Racing game I ever played Thorpe Park 1987), Burnin' Rubber- Porsche 956 (1990), Daytona USA- Hornet (1994), Sega Rally 1- Toyota Celica GT-Four (1995), Grand Prix 2- Williams FW16 (1996), V-Rally 97- Mitsubishi Evo 4 (1997), Metropolis Street Racer- Mazda Miata/MX-5 (2000) By the end of the year 2000 the "house had been built". The last 22 years has been about sequels, rip-offs and HD remasters. No fresh racing game concepts have come to be table which is a bit sad.

  11. From the late 80's, it was Outrun's Testarossa and Chase HQ's Porsche 928 for me. Always a treat seeing the rare sight of a black 928 on the road in real life, ultimate nostalgia. Let's go Mr. Driver!

  12. I love this video! I'd love to see another one like this, this was one of the most seamless collabs I've ever seen!

And I'd love to see more compilations like this from Andy! make a video discussing all the cars from 1984 Transformers, or something like that. Great work guys!

  13. I hope I didn't lead you up the garden path! If you learned the origins of the Taraco Neoroder from the Super Cars Wikipedia article, I added the source of the 3 cars back in 2010. Both the Vaug and the Retron's inspirations were easy to spot, even if the Retron is easily confused with a Lamborghini Diablo. But the Taraco really stumped me, I too thought it was a BMW.
I used the wording "appears" in my article contribution as I could only base my assumption on going down the image search rabbit hole, starting with the BMW but then expanding into other European marques. With your connections and wider reach it would be awesome if the original authors could clarify whether it is actually based on the Alpha Romeo, and why they made the changes they did, especially when the Vaug and Retron have very few.

  14. Great video! Outrun is my all time favourite arcade. Still never completed it though!
Suggestions for another video…chase hq, need for speed underground and who could ignore gran turismo 1 and the honda nsx
