  1. The most impractical item is the wallpaper backsplash. Wallpaper is not durable, and a backsplash exists to repel splashes of stuff. Wash it a few times and it will come off. Curtains for lower cabinets can be functional in very cold or very humid climates, but otherwise it looks cheap. Island seating is OK as long as it doesn't interfere with food prep and appliances. Seating at a counter next to a cooktop is dangerous! Counter-covered sink seems expensive and doesn't accomplish much. Shallow cabinets can be very handy. I'm against open shelving in kitchens, where everything can acquire airborne grease and dust, but behind a cabinet door it may be a good use of a shallow space, like between the studs of an interior wall.

  2. Hi Mark, I have been looking for real estate in France where many kitchens have curtains instead of base cabinets. I'm not a fan of it since it also requires laundering and most likely ironing to keep them looking good. Please give me a good set of drawer base cabinets and I'm in heaven. Mark & Scott

  3. I love vintage style and have remodeled my 1929 yr old house's bathroom and now kitchen…..this said I like farmhouse type of style with the sink and retro type of appliances….HOWEVER that curtain thing is hideous.

  4. Wait, how exactly does the farmhouse sink protect the cabinets underneath it from water damage? I like having a lip on the counter in front of the sink because as I'm splashing around water inside the sink it makes it harder for water to run up and over the edge. But if you use a farmhouse style sink that has that lead Edge curved and draped over the side like they do, then any water you Splash on it will simply run down the front side of the sink and onto the cabinets below

  5. I think the curtain on the sink cabinet can prevent moisture build-up in the cabinet. I see people mentioning curtains would be unsanitary. Which is strange, because you can throw it in the wash whenever you want. And, how often do people really wash and wipe their cabinets anyway, can one not wash the curtain every week, or whenever it gets dirty? With all that said, I certainly wouldn't put curtains on all my lower cabinets, because it would look too "country" and would not keep the dust or my cat out 😀 But, for only one cabinet, this could be considered, especially if you find a nice fabric to go with your style.

  6. Hard YES on the island seating! When you host, it's impossible to avoid spending some time in the kitchen while your guests are there. And they're going to be around you wanting to talk. So would you rather they be standing around, or sitting around out of your way? Island seating is the best way for both them and you to be comfortable while you're in the kitchen while still being able to chat. Hard NO on everything else, except possibly the shallow storage — but don't give up deep storage for shallow, only put it where you can't fit anything else.

  7. Wallpaper as backsplash material is a bad idea 🥺 I cook very little, I'm very careful when preparing food on my countertops, and still, there are a few splashes on my tiled backsplash almost every time.
I like the idea of a dining area st the island. With wood, this should be fairly easy, but a stone overhang that size needs a lot of support.

  8. Just came across your youtube earlier this week and have binging hard. Great channel. In older videos you said you dislike putting "stuff" (I assume seating and appliances) in islands. Here you sort of give seating a pass now. How about for appliances? My wife and I have always imagined it would be very great to have an outward facing cooktop on an island in an open floor plan style kitchen so we can engage with each other or our guests more easily than when facing a wall.

  9. I'm a huge fan of farmhouse/apron front sinks despite being a detractor before getting my first one. The surprising thing to me was how much of a difference that small 1" – 2" drop from counter height in the front made when it came to putting stacks of dishes, pots, etc. into the sink and loading the dishwasher from the sink. I don't think that's something people talk about enough!
I also really hate cabinet curtains – you're in an area with water, other liquids, and food, so having a soft, absorbent material BELOW counter height just seems insane to me. I realize you can wash them, but that means taking them off, running them through the laundry, and rehanging them (and your ugly cabinet is just exposed for that whole time unless you have a backup set). I much prefer a hard surface I can just wipe down and forget about!
