Ancient Motunui boats even carry the same symbol as the Heart. Chief Tui wanted to explore the seas too but lost his drive after his friend’s tragic death. Maybe that trauma severed his connection to the ocean, turning him away. But notice, he wore the same necklace in that flashback. What if the Heart was inside it then, only to be lost at sea, and returned to Moana later?
