WWF WrestleMania XIV took place in Boston on March 29th 1998. Seen by many fans as a turning point for the WWF and the show that helped WWF become much more competitive with WCW, WrestleMania 14 is a landmark edition of the WWF’s biggest show of the year.
WrestleMania 14 is headlined by a WWF Championship match; Shawn Michaels of D-Generation X vs Stone Cold Steve Austin. Austin won the right to face HBK at the 1998 Royal Rumble but since then a lot of twists and turns have appeared on the road to WrestleMania. Mike Tyson, the special guest enforcer for the main event, joined DX – a move that helped stacked the odds against Stone Cold. Also, in a much more real sense, Shawn Michaels had suffered a serious back injury at both his physical and mental state were not good heading into the big main event in Boston. Both competitors had a few things they’d need to overcome to ensure the main event entertained.
Elsewhere on the card The Undertaker finally steps into the ring with his little brother Kane, the New Age Outlaws defend their tag team titles against Cactus Jack & Chainsaw Charlie in a dumpster match, and The Rock puts his Intercontinental Championship up for grabs in a match against Ken Shamrock.

i wish shawn got to ride the full attitude era. he was the attitude era and deserved it so much.
Imo this was the best wrestlemanias ever
This was a weird WrestleMania, weird in a good way. It's the first WWF Attitude Era WrestleMania, but it's still holding on to little bits and pieces of the previous era, just enough to emphasize the changing of the times.
The Michaels match is a painful one for me to watch. At the time I was just a casual fan who had no idea he was actually injured. Fast forward 20 years and I'd gone through my own severe back issues that resulted in (successful) fusion surgery. Not long after that surgery I rewatched this match and got zero enjoyment from it as I could see that Shawn was in serious pain. How he could still take those bumps, knowing the pain that would immediately result, is beyond me.
Thank you for doing a review on this Mania. I am always amazed at how little content is available (in terms of reviews) for this PPV. This is the first Mania of the Attitude Era, the crowning of the Austin Era, the first battle of Kane and Taker. It also has an excellent Euro Title match between HHH and Owen Hart, an awesome Dumpster Match between the Outlaws and Cactus Jack (Mick Foley) and Chainsaw Charlie (Terry Funk), and it where the Rock first dropped his "smell what the Rock is cooking" tagline, granted slightly altered. Also, the light heavyweight title match is very good despite a quiet crowd reaction. Really, the only letdown is the tag team rumble (which is fine because we get the returning LOD) and the Rock v Shamrock match is meh, but the post match theatrics were great.
yo thats crazy you say that about Michaels Entrance. I never was a fan, always Stone Cold. Reason I watch is because of Stone Cold. Michaels Entrance here, was incredible. I had goose bumps, nearly teary eyed with the intensity he was showing, truly like this is it, exactly as you described.
I had to watch this ppv and really enjoyed it. The crowd was very hot and what a significant time in wrestling this was
Even though the Attitude Era started with the Montreal Screwjob, WrestleMania XIV was the starting point of the Austin era. Bret Hart and Shawn Michaels were long gone, it was time for Steve Austin (and later Rock) to carry the WWF batten into the future.
WrestleMania XIV was the last time we ever saw the Reggie Era Intercontinental Championship belt, the one that was held by Ultimate Warrior, Rick Rude, Mr. Perfect, Bret Hart, Roddy Piper, British Bulldog, Razor Ramon, Shawn Michaels and Owen Hart. The night after WrestleMania XIV Rock is holding the Attitude Era Intercontinental Championship belt.
I love this Wrestlemania. I wasn't into wrestling all that much then but after Austin's win I was totally hooked
HBK is the best of all time
The attitude era was full of great moments but the matches wasn’t really good.
I loved this wrestlmania. It's one of the many I can go back and watch anytime
LoD patched things up by making a Sunny side up sandwich.
What I love about this Mania is that there are still pieces for ongoing rivalries in place, like Taker/Kane, Rock/Shamrock and Farroq, and even Sable/Mero. Really don't like how in modern times they treat it like the end of a season when things should be fluid if there is literally no offseason.
i dont blame shawn forbeing pissed after this one. He thought his career was over and they wanted him to go out embarassed flat on the canvas with an austin 316 shirt laying on him. Not really the way you want one of the best ever to go out. Luckily he came back but i completely understand the frustration he felt after the match.
Taka and really Kientai was an underrated group, WWE should of put more time and effort into the light heavyweight division.
I didnt see this when it aired, but I saw it a few weeks later on tape and I LOVED it!!!! I was (and still am) a huge Austin mark and seeing him win the WWF title was the most amazing thing I'd seen in my brief/young life. Loved seeing Cactus and Funk take the tag titles and the Undertaker's enterence at the start of his match was just one of the coolest things I'd seen as a wrestling fan.
I hated Sable! She had ZERO personality and I know she was popular but I wanted someone that could cut a promo.
This was and remains one of the best Wrestlemania's. All the matches had a reason to be on the card, all the storylines were developed, and there wasn't a boring match on the card.
I was there at the fleet center and the pop when SCSA won was amazing. What a great day. We all knew its was going to be Austin’s day so the mood around for everyone was just amazing.
This might be my favorite WrestleMania main event of all time.
Let’s just say that Wrestlemania 14 is a fire 🔥 Wrestlemania. Definitely in my top 10. Especially with some much build and interesting matches and outcomes. Starting of a new era, first official match between Kane and Undertaker which always great on every rewatch. All 3 major belts had stories and felt unique. Especially for the time. I’d say best ppv 1998 belt summer slam was really good when we get to that later on in the year.
Fact:This Was Shawn Last Wrestlemania Match Unitl 19
3:25 No not the Amazing French Canadians. The Quebecers.
I never missed a RAW episode after this MANIA
The king of the ring match between Austin and HBK was better before Austin Hurt his neck and shawn hurt his back the wrestlemania match was decent
Fun Fact: 6:30 thats the first time he said “Smell What The Rock Is Cookin’”
If you look at the wwf from 94 to 98 and and it's a whole different world different company or at least it felt like it anyway wwe sucks now thank God for AEW and NJPW
Finally caught up! Damn this series is fun. Not looking forward to waiting a week tho… Might have to rewatch it
There’s allot of things that we look back on now that as a kid I thought was pretty cool. I enjoyed LOD 2000 when it first debuted.
HBK entrance gives me goosebumps…. he was clearly nervous and then he TURNS IT ON when he comes out and shouts "WHOS THE FUCKIN MAN" he had something to prove yet he was PISSED like he didnt want it all to end due to a fuckin injury.
So Lesnar took Marks move… Wow I would be pissed… Lol
Best Mania Ever
Sable was so beautiful. Beautiful genetics
Anyone who has ever hurt a vertebrae or herniated a disc can see Shawn was clearly not faking that injury. There's a certain kind of pain that you can only experience with that injury and those that haven't, just couldn't imagine. You can spot it a mile away. He's sore to touch (Mike touches his back), his back is too stiff to climb through the ropes and needs his knees to pick himself up, his leg has gone heavy and has an obvious limp. He was definitely not faking it.
This was one of my favourite wrestlemanias of all time. I will never forget the Rock vs Shamrock match because I thought it was cool that Shamrock went completely off the rails 😂. Obviously the Undertaker vs Kane and HBK vs Austin will never be forgotten. Great times as a kid.
The PPV that got me back into wrestling
