Whenever the holiday season approaches, you can rely on one thing – but by the time New Year’s rolls around, you will have heard Mariah Carey’s “All I Want For Christmas is You” more times than you can count. In many ways, Carey has become the Queen of Christmas, but in recent years people seem to forget that before she started embracing the Christmas thing, Carey was one of the most successful recording stars of all time. While her recent singles haven’t been that successful, she’s been racking up number-one hits since 1990, when her first single, “Vision of Love,” rocketed to number one on the Billboard charts.
One thing worth noting is that Carey was always able to reinvent herself. In the early nineties, she was more of a pop princess. But, later in the nineties, she reinvented herself as a sex symbol/diva with some of her biggest hits, including the immortal “Fantasy” and her collaboration with Jay-Z, “Heartbreaker.” However, an ill-fated detour into acting almost derailed her career, with the film Glitter ranking as one of the biggest box office bombs of all time, although she received much better reviews for Lee Daniels’s Precious.
In this episode of WTF Happened to this Celebrity, which is written by Mathew Plale, narrated and produced by Taylor James Johnson, and edited by Kier Gomes, we examine Mariah Carey’s career highs and lows and discuss what makes her such an enduring icon.

Could you do a wtf video about Dianna Agron 🙏🙏🙏?
wrong! she was bor in 1970
Only just started watching … but … Mariah was born 1970, not 1969 😉
Wow Mariah Carey is the daughter of Luciano Pavarotti!?? I didn't know that. That edit alone just made me wanna turn off this clip.
Guys, let's do a 'Whatever happened to Martin Brest'. He hasn't directed a film since the failure of Gigli (2003). I've always wondered what he's been up to, the director of Scent of a woman, Midnight Run and Beverley Hills Cop just disappeared? You have to do one on him.
Guess sucking Tony mottola's dick was worth it…..I think.
Mental illness happened.
There’s gonna be a time when All I want for Christmas is You won’t be number 1 in the charts every Christmas.
God I miss the 90s / early 00's to a slightly lesser degree…. everything just fell apart big-time thereafter, and has been continuing to ever since. Mariah being no exception, merely another example of something that was INCREDIBLE during the enlightened and sane era. Who then went on to fall apart into a dizzying mess during the derp era, of which we are now stuck in until the end of time… which it will bring about, no doubt about that.
Well let's not forget #justiceforglitter and precious and her other films
She's still alive?
I have all of her albums on CD.
I'm a huge Mariah Carey Fan forever and always!!!!
One important thing you forgot to mention is that Glitter was released on 9/11. It definitely played a huge role on why the movie commercially flopped. That era was generally a bad experience for her. Her label sabotaging her career, her needing to work extra hard and no time to sleep, her family drama, media portraying her as a crazy person, until she finally snapped and got hospitalized for 8 months i think. Later on in her career she dreaded that movie to the point that she would not even mention the word glitter or anything that can be associated with it. She even denies its existence until 2018 when she finally accepted it after it's soundtrack topped the iTunes chart (after 17 years)
Don't care.
An absolute queen
She was born on March 27, 1970 not 1969
Love her Christmas music.
I actually liked Glitter, it wasn’t as bad as everyone said. It also released the same time as 9/11 happened, the world ended for a bit and all of the PR for it got overshadowed by the news. It never got a fair chance of things were normal in the world.
Also you forgot her amazing AppleTV Plus Christmas special in 2020!
Just call me Tinkerbell 🧚🏽♀️. I love.Glitter✨. To each their own, carry on 😊.
When you make something like this do you need the artist permission? Do they even know about it?
I mean, she RULED the 199Os and the 2OOOs but by the 2O1Os she fell off as she was getting older and thus irrelevant and her music just was not as charming as they were before. Her albums then were barely successful showing the music industry and audience has moved on from her. We are in a new decade now, three years in to be exact, and she has yet to release any new material to show case she can still bring it. I think she is about done as far as her music status goes.
she's perfect 10
those guys are lucky
The Song Of The Decade award for We Belong Together was given by Billboard because it was #1 for 14 weeks which was a huge thing. It had record setting radio success and it was a huge hit. The award was given by official music charts.
Loved the video overall ❤
Mariah Carey is My favorite female singer wish she was My wife right now
Was surprised to see Maria on these series. But nevertheless. You did so well with story telling.
I think you should do an video on Rebecca De Mornay id like to know WTF happened to her
She was born in 1970. She's two years younger than
me. March 27, 1970.
She couldn't hide the man in her anymore.
SOrry but Mariah's Rainbow still had 2 #1s on Billboard, so she had her last #1 before the breakdown in the year 2000. She had a solid sucess with I know hat you want with Busta Rhymes in 2002. So basically she had a Billboard break only for 3 years until 2005 when she came back with The Emancipation of Mimi.
She is a talentless hack and the beginning of the pop only mainstream we have nowadays.
You had so many incorrect details and stats.
I'm a lifelong lamb (a term to describe Mariah Carey fans). I feel sad because I feel like in recent years she has mainly gained hate and negative press from the media and general people alike. They seem to have forgotten her contribution in the music world and how she has paved the way for many singers/artists who are inspired by her, esp. in the genres of R&B and hip-hop (Mariah is credited to be the first pop superstar who combined pop and rap/hip-hop in her music, as shown by her collaboration with the rapper Ol' Dirty Bastard/ODB in Fantasy remix).
Now I personally don't care if Mariah doesn't sing anymore, she has left her mark in the music world and her legacy will live on forever. She has already earned her LEGEND status and deservingly so! And NO ONE can ever take that away from her. She has paid her dues and she doesn't need to prove anything to anyone anymore.
We should all be grateful for her contribution in music. She basically RULED the 90s and became a blueprint for the next singers after her. Without her, there would be NO Beyonce, Xtina, Ariana, Rihanna, and many more. She is truly an ICON. Often imitated, never duplicated.
I wasn’t a fan of her music, (hip-hop head/metalhead), but she had goat numbers in the 90s…. she had her meltdown, but she kind of bounced back, but the whole Eminem thing she came out looking worse…. that was a nail in the coffin, haven’t watched the video not gonna…. but still much respect to her numbers which are probably pretty close to Eminem‘s, she could be higher I don’t know she dominated The charts in the 90s y’all I’m telling you….. she was like to music what “Titanic“ was to movies, it just stayed at the top of the charts and stayed there
She has sold enough records for 200 careers.
She wisely chose to make music of quality, and quality always endures.
MC is an american treasure, and it's time she gets the recognition she has justly
earned & deserves.
🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆
I luvd glitter for all it was. She's awesome!
the last album of hers i liked was daydream. however i loved e= mc2. she is riding on the success of her massive bops from the post people feel bad for her past and how great of a singer and song writer she is so they support her even though she has attached herself to extremely boring music. her voice is like a beautiful frame but an empty frame with no picture in it.
I always preferred her work from when her career was closely managed by others. By Butterfly it was clear that she wanted to be an entertainer more than a singer. Also, her looks changed almost as much as Michael Jackson's, going from a gorgeous mixed race young woman to resembling a p0rn star; even on the album covers she starts looking inhumanly airbrushed.
