Meet All The Witches! Every Witch In Wicked Explained!
In the weeks following the release of Wicked, I can’t help feeling drawn back to the Land of Oz and its vast cast of characters. While there are many with distinct quirks and backgrounds, I find the witches of Wicked to be the most interesting. As there are so few of them, it seems like their abilities are not only unique, but few and far between. It’s made clear throughout the first film that many want the chance to study sorcery, but not everyone at Shiz has what it takes to graduate from the program. Regardless, the people of Oz hold witches and wizards in high esteem, with many of them taking on leadership roles and becoming prominent public figures. The witches shown in Wicked are no exception, which is why I want to use today’s video to evaluate their individual motivations, abilities, and future potential.

Hey
Your comment at the 1:10 mark is incorrect. The Wicked Witch of the West isn't constantly trying to prevent Dorothy from returning to Kansas. She just wants the ruby (originally silver) slippers back because they belong to her family. She doesn't care whether Dorothy is in OZ or not, she wants the shoes back that her sister received as a gift from their father. They are a family heirloom, which Glinda wrongfully stole & gave to Dorothy without Elphaba's permission.
4:18 Neither Glinda nor the wand make the bubble. Before she attempts to leave Munchkinland she clearly steps on something that activates the bubble. It’s obviously a technological creation from the wizard and isnt based in magic.
The fact the Glinda stays with the Wizard is baffling….so wrong for that
I keep hearing folks say grim-or-ie but isn’t it grimoire (grim -rawr) ?
In stage play elpha says wave your wand glinda but you cant change the spell.. so it means glinda has powers
Neither Glinda nor Morrible seem to actually be doing magic to me. Glinda is obviously stepping on something to make the bubble, and there's actually a scene of her stepping on a button from Ch.2 iirc. Morrible on the other hand was only seen doing ANY kind of "Magic" when Elphaba's letter comes to Shiz, but before she does, the Wizard's invention flies into the sky to make it rain and Glinda finds it weird, so id' also assume it also stops it when she does her little hand wave, otherwise she could supposedly make it rain and stop by herself if she specializes in weather magic. She should have been doing all types of stuff already.
If either of these characters had actual magic, they'd be able to read the Grimmorre. It's literally readable by magic wielders, I.E, Elphaba, and even in the little play put on during the song "One short day" they say that the "Wise old ones" all could read it. If magic was just something you could pick up, I have no idea why there's literally only 3, maybe 4 people if we count Nessa (If she actually becomes a witch and not just a tyrant called a witch), who is doing it.
And now we know what happened to Madame Morrible after the Wicked – She was banished to China without her powers and then she end up marrying Nick Young's father 😉
1:38 her mother having an affair and drinking green elixir given to her by a wizard should be an indication that Gov. Troppo IS NOT the father!!!!
Did you actually watch the movie? She creates the bubble by stepping on a button. Clearly a Wizard of Oz invention.
But Glinda didn’t cast the bubble spell. You can see and hear her step on a peddle that activates the bubble.
The wizard is also Elphabas bio dad.
Glinda is the Witch of The South(MGM was a combo of both Good Witches from the book) it was theorized that Morrible is the Witch of the North(Possibly Mombi? the WICKED Witch of the North) wonder if we will ever get an official Good Witch of The North?
if the wizard is able to make machines that can fly (bubble machine) he wouldn’t need flying monkeys in the first place. right?
The Wizard's only power is BDE.
Idk if Nessarose counts as a witch considering she doesn’t seem to have any active magic herself. She can’t read the Grimmerie like Elphaba can (evident by her misreading the spell and cursing Boq’s heart) and doesn’t have telekinesis like Elphaba. Glinda too seems to have no true power. It’s interesting they don’t call her the Good Witch—she is simply “Glinda the Good”.
I don't know what you meant saying that Madame Morrible didn't have powers in the Wicked books- she absolutely did. She even enchants Glinda, Elphaba, and Nessa to become the Witches of Oz (all three absolutely have magic in the books as well.)
Spoiler alert : the wizard is her dad . . .
Glinda can use magic but she is not as powerful as Elphie who has an innate talent for the craft because she has to rely on her wand. Nessie on the other hand was able to cast a spell from the grimmerie on her own even if she did say the words wrong so it's safe to say she does possess a bit of magic. As for the bubble machine, it is a magical invention I believe. You'd notice that all of the wizard's other inventions are things we've seen in the real world. Ozians just assumed they were magical because they didn't have them in Oz and were probably considered advanced. Perhaps Glinda or Morrible enchanted the wizard's invention thus creating the magical bubble machine. To those who disagree consider this, why on earth would Morrible hand Glinda a training wand and include her in the seminar only to not teach her magic? In Oz lore and other reiterations, magic has always been a craft learned. Some of y'all haven't read a single Oz book and it shows. In simpler terms, Elphie was born with magical powers whilst Glinda learned magic.
I get the feeling that the Wizard targets witches to seduce them into doing his bidding. I also wonder if Nessarose and Elphaba’s mother was a witch, and if that’s why he seduced her in the first place. Although I haven’t read the novel, I think the Wizard seduced Morrible, which would explain her dedication to him. In the musical, he offers Glinda the green drink, implying he tries to seduce her as well while revealing that he is Elphaba’s father. Before learning Elphaba is his daughter, he almost convinces her to work with him by dancing with her in Act 2.
What ever happened to the Good Witch of the North? Does she ever been mentioned in Wicked?
Great video. I assumed Madame Morrible was also responsible for making the animals lose their voices? The Wizard can't have been doing that with / technology (although not sure why he wouldn't try and learn magic…maybe he did and failed). Was it explained in the books?
Also – in the play/books did it explain why the public thought the animals were being rounded up and put in cages? The Wizard said it was to create a 'common enemy'…but the students were obviously shocked and had no idea why it was happening (most of the students didn't even seem aware of the history with the drought that had happened in the past). Is that explained in part two?
In think glinda are the really wicked witch the wicked witch dont want to hurt eny ones and clinda want to kill the people she dont like and the wicked witch keep them from danger and warn then to stay away because she knows that she dont have always control with her powers and dontwant to hurt any one
Lot of inaccuracies in this video. Dislike.
what were the powers
Who is the wicked witch of the south?
wdym “i fully suspect” at 5:47 😂
Actually Glinda become a very skillful witch witch abilities closes to Elphaba's but due to the fact that she can't read the Grimmerie her powers can't reach a full potential. What was your research for this video?
HAS NO ONE ELSE NOTICED THAT THE BUBBLE WAS MECHANICALLY ACTIVATED BEFORE THAT GIRL ASKED HER WAS SHE FRIENDS WITH ELPHABA
Well, thanks for the spoiler warning. 🫠
