Microsoft has announced a new version of its search engine Bing, powered by an upgraded version of the same AI technology that underpins chatbot ChatGPT. The Verge’s Nilay Patel sat down with Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella to discuss.

  1. Your best question (what happens when AI generated content becomes the content AI uses to generate future content) he completely dodged.

Don’t worry folks, this one “truth” has the chance of ruining all content. Stay tuned.

  2. Wow! What a powerful interview. Much respect to both of these men. Makes me wonder if this new Bing Chat can potentially wipe out the need for front end websites. Seems like the Bing Chat interface can potentially be that front end for everything as it's pulling in all the relevant content from else where. It's as if Bing Chat is generating a custom front end with exactly what you want, dynamically in your face. I think it's going to even pull in pictures, likely maps and other visuals I assume. Can this change the way we make or think about websites, can a site just be pure JSON data or some other structured API instead for those that just need to get information out there and not technically have a flashy website?

  3. I thought it was an excellent interview! I have been so impressed with Microsoft's recent product launches and I will definitely be giving Bing a try.

I must say that I'm very concerned about Google's future. Once you've used Chat GPT, you realize how extremely inferior Google search is at this point. Chat GPT is just on another level and will revolutionize the way we search.

  4. We've had the "same me" search method for over TWO decades now with zero difference. IT'S. ABOUT. TIME. It's what happens when one company dominates everything. This cannot come soon enough and once it does, I'm switching camp DAY ONE.

  5. Microsoft has HUGE advantage here: As advertising is not their "core" business with little or no financial incentives, they can afford to go ALL OUT. Google, OTOH, has to thread very carefully as 60% of its business derives from advertising. This is the proverbial kid who goes ALL out with nothing to lose against a seasoned pro and actually wins the game~

  6. Funny that the market lopped 100bn off Google's market cap because it got one answer wrong. Yesterday I asked ChatGPT whether Sydney was an hour in front of Brisbane by an hour in time. It said Sydney was behind. I argued that it was wrong and it argued back that I was wrong. Then I argued back that it was wrong and it apologised that it was indeed wrong. I didn't see Microsoft lose 100bn because of that. This is nothing but hype.

  7. Nilay stole the show. This is the first time I was more interested on the questions than Satya’s answers. And it is not easy to take the attention aways away from a charismatic leader like Satya. Thanks so much for the great interview.
