Similarly to super saiyan blue. I think Kubo might try to simplfy the blade back into just shikai and bankai like the original. But who knows
I never liked the final design. The mismatched dual shikai, the broad bankai and the weird one horned look he dons.
Maybe the anime will have a redesign. Making him look more like fused zangetsu looked.
Ichigos very first sword had a sheath for the first few dozen chapters before byakuya broke it and urahara reforged it

I think kubo got caught up tbh. He just forget. Like how toriyama forgot sayians had tails or that there was a super sayian 3 form. my theory of T.O.E: it is said that the monster is a child and maybe because of that its lonely, it probably took the guy we saw texting dom in making friends i think the heart belongs to the dude talking to dom though and the drawing deoicts the monster playing with the heart

Surely the bigger sword is the sheathe. You can see in the true bankai the white part which used to be the whitened bigger zangetsu forms the outside of the sword, or the sheathe to put it another way.
The inner bit is black which is from the smaller sword which remained black in Shikai and did not turn white.
I just realized that Ichigo might have done what Aizen did with his Zanpakuto and merged with it, whatever effect that it has Ichigo now possesses it as a passive ability just like Aizen.

If i remember correctly, the explanation continues a little further. Saying that unlike the blade, the sheat can be repaired without trouble, so maybe he just repaired the sheat and as you say, uses the blade without the sheat (like a normal soul reaper would). Because even if his sheat is a blade, it still works as the sheat only
