Where would be a good source to see American immigration to Japan in the time period? I can always find charts and graphs on Japanese immigration but not for the other way (or is it literally that it was so low that there is no recorded data?)

Took history of the US military in college and this was like taking that class again, I love it.

Japanese self isolationism for hundreds of years was because they thought they were more advanced than the rest of the world. and didn't want there society corrupted by the rest of the world. Because they believed they were the most advanced society… got a massive shock when the USA navy turned up to make Japanese open up to the rest of the world…. The Japanese realised that they were still a backwards medieval country. Whilst the European and American had left them so behind in virtually all areas socially , industrially, military , politically … so they change their whole society's behavior. Evan to the extent of giving up vegetarianism which most of the population was. And copying military normals of the Europeans Evan down to uniforms and military ranks… They even stopped killing washed up sailors from shipwrecks.. I suggest you you read the book by a member othe 1st Japanese delegation to be sent on world diplomatic mission
