Why Bike Racing Is Now FASTER Than Ever! | GCN Tech Show Ep. 281

Every year, pro cycling seems to be getting quicker and quicker. The 19.6km time trial on stage 1 of the 2023 Giro d’Italia was won by Remco Evenepoel at a mind-boggling average speed of 55.211km/h! So how has pro cycling got so fast? Alex and Ollie also discuss this, plus a gold Giro-inspired Colnago, gold wheels and a whole lot more on this week’s GCN Tech Show!

  1. #AskGCNTech I am considering buying a Tri/TT bike for upcoming triathlon events and due to budget am looking at older models (~10 years old) without modern tech/aerodynamics. Given that these are shorter distance, I can use my road bike (‘23 Aeroad CF SLX). Would I be better served on an older TT bike with medium depth wheels or road bike with deeper wheels or a disc wheel?

  2. What an elitist load of twaddle. You guys need to humble yourselves. I switched off at the gold leaf Dubai bike nonsense. You should be embarrassed putting your name to this content.

  3. I think the reason for a lot of cynicism, especially with aero, is that people simply do not believe aero makes any difference in anything slower than a car; and even then a lot of folks think you need to be in an F1 car before aero becomes "a thing". Trying to convince people that a bike, the thing thing they rode as children, is actually affected by aerodynamics naturally seems like a huge stretch.

  4. Aw! Donut media shout out!! As a car guy I love!! You Should get Manon to race one of the guys on the track and get Pumphrey riding something with just 2 wheels!!

  5. It's ridiculous the price of aero bikes. There is more savings in handlebars, tyres, aero helmet or simply an aero position than there is between the Eurobike and a Canyon Aeroad. $10,000 for an aero bike versus $1000 for a cheap bike that potentially has the exact same materials and time in it.

  6. Oh Ollie. You are always critising photography in the vault but you missed the post growing out of ronorr's brake hood!
Gold bikes? Not one for the weight weenies then.
Hooray, "comments of the week" without a jingle, fab.

  8. Or. Doping has gotten more sophisticated and that combined with proper diet and proper training, you are a well oiled machine.

But no we can dream doping left cycling. It's a lovely thought….

  9. Wierd i searched individual time trials and there is nothing really in top 10 from last decade. I actully dont think new equipment is as fast or rather much faster than from decade before…..

  10. I know that pronunciation nit picks are pretty irrelevant, but it does hit the ear strangely that most of the GCN presenters seem to pronounce "giro" as "zhiro"; it's giro! as in literally the way you pronounce the letter g on its own – gee – with a "ro" on the end. Giro! :p
