White Dwarf 497 – Miranda's Superfluous Review

Today I review White Dwarf issue #497. The Warhammer bunker starts a crusade. There’s a new combat patrol. And we can now play Warhammer Underworlds without cards?

  1. A couple of 90s throwbacks in this issue. Washes were one of the first ways I learned to paint (with GW inks). I always struggled to avoid blotcheyness (not sure if that is a word) so hopefully there is some advice on how to avoid that in this article. Nice review again Miranda and team.

  2. The name Von Ryan's Lictors comes from an early codex, maybe 3rd Ed where they are mentioned in a little bit of story, talking about specific variants of Tyranids. I liked the Kill Team article the most because that is the only GW game I am still playing, Love Kill Team.

  3. When you said Warmachine, I had been, to that point, only listening and made one of those mad scrambles for the phone, knocking it to the floor 🤦‍♂️ Love the content and viewpoints. Thank you for sharing 🙏

  4. I like the cards for Underworlds. More on that, I think it's either cards or no cards at all; I think prebuilt decks are fine for building a foundation but if there is no variance at all (game to game) I don't think it's worth the extra game element. Having dabbled with Hrothgorn's Mantrappers back in the day the cards let you customise your playstyle within a more restrictive environment of "this set of miniatures".
