I took this. I live in the California Central Coast and Vandenberg has launches that shake the very ground.
As you can see, the exhaust gases expand exponentially as the atmosphere thins with elevation. I would have gotten a better shot but I had no idea there was a launch. I just happened to be at the right place, right time.

Surprisingly the water at the start is mostly to absorb sound. The waves damage the rocket and structure.
