When Cortez came across the Aztecs, it was a clash between two worlds. And Cortez’s won. But what if he didn’t. What if the Aztecs beat the Spanish and held on? How drastically would this have changed colonization in Latin America. Would there be Latin America?

what if the native americans had guns before columbus came who would win then
I can believe Spain not mounting an expedition after a Cortez defeat, but I can't see other Europeans staying away. I don't think the Aztecs would get much time to recover before someone like England or even France comes along. I also wonder if Europeans knew or found out about the massive human sacrifice practiced by the Aztecs if it might not incite some new "crusade" to put an end to the "devil worshippers". I mean, even the modern world would be sickened by what the Aztecs practiced.
Here’s an idea for a video: What if England had colonized California instead of the Spanish
Cortez's success is probably entirely up to his officers, who collectively had the experience to come up with the actually effective things that are attributed to Cortez.
Half a minute into the video and there is already a historical lie. Hernán Cortés did not ordered his men to burn the ships, he ordered them to salvage then for the nails with proved essential in making bridges and boats during the expedition. Since they had disobeyed a direct order not to conquer anything there was no turning back from the moment they left port.
To call aztecs the most advanced civilization in the continent is a MASSIVE but I mean MASSIVE overstatement
Incas had a literal road system that is as long as a continent
And a writing system so complex it takes computers and linguists years to decode
I refuse to believe the Aztecs could survive a population decline of over 90%. Hell, even just 20% would crumble them.
Also, I think Mexico still converts to Christianity.
what if china and japan sailed east in this time line also. <3
Interesting video, but… the Maya?! Ok, that did it for me. I’m out. I’d recommend checking out Moctezuma II’s reforms and the Purépecha military advances to get a sense of what way the wind was blowing, culturally, assuming Cortes died/Spanish were routed during La Noche Triste and its aftermath.
If this happened, then maybe the colonization of the Philippines wouldn't happened as well due to the circumstances.
All of this is without taking the fact of the other American civilization and tribes in both south and north of the continent, the Aztecs, now with a more solidified power, could probably try to invade again the purépecha empire or even maybe try to have better relations with them and the purépecha would have a million options how to react to this new context, the Inca could probably have enough time to finish their civil war and rebuild themselves, strengthening their power or at least be more stable to be able to confront other civilizations, If European nations arrive at the US and Canadian parts of North America and do similar things like they did in our timeline, mainly relocating natives tribes to the west by force, maybe they could somehow have contact with the aztecs! So many things could happen! I’m seriously surprised nobody has done a detailed alternate history scenario with this context and if some has done it I’m surprised it has not become more popular because the whole thing is a gold mine of history telling possibilities!
More likely either delayed or other power came. In the Philippines the natives killed Magellan but still got colonized.
If they ever do a cortez series they should present cortez as a saul Goodman figure, since he basically bullshited his way to victory and got famous by telling a bunch of stuff he didn't do
The Aztec ruled through fear and intimidation. If they beat the Spanish and now possessed all their weapons left behind, they would reestablish themselves and even conquer more territory. The Aztecs lost every battle they had with the Tarascans but with muskets and cannons, they would finally conquer them. Even though the Aztec and the Spanish fought a bitter fight, I think there would be interest in both sides establishing trade eventually. The Aztecs would find value in weapons to conquer their native rivals and the Spanish love gold so there would eventually be diplomatic relationships. The Aztecs valued education and knowledge and might pay for Spanish knowledge on warfare, infrastructure or just about anything. Maybe the Aztecs would begin fortifying their city like the Spanish do with stone walls, this was the first time the Aztecs experienced siege warfare. Horses would allow the Aztecs to travel faster and carry larger amounts of supplies they ever did before. The Aztecs had an efficient form of farming on islands on their lake, removing sewage from their city, providing fresh water, etc… They were better at infrastructure than modern Mexico City is today. It wouldn't be a utopia, they would probably still be sacrificing people and would be ruthless to their neighbors and after a boost of moral after defeating the Spanish, they might begin to fracture and decline but whatever is left would not be so easily conquered. Cortez was beyond lucky when he invaded and the Aztecs made every mistake they could make. Moctezoma II was a horrible leader and gave into all of Cortez's demands, he's one of the biggest reasons Cortez was successful. Sorry for the essay, I imagine this scenario all the time
I would have LOVED a Turtledove novel about this
I see aztecs empire collapsing becouse is fregile alliance whose natives would easly use european weapons against backward aztecs
Instant dislike just for that "Cortez" spelling
Nobody expects the Aztecan inquisition
Cockburn Town, lmao
There is a podcast called rhe Rest is History that has a 7 to 8 part series on the conquest of the Aztec.
Cortez had several points where he almost failed, captured, or killed. His expedition was technically illegal as he basically stole the governor of Cuba expedition, and technically, the Aztecs had "submitted" to the kings of Spain. So Cortez capturing and killing Montezuma was him wrongfully attacking one of the kings subjects. And the descendents of the Aztec royal family have successfully managed to use that fact to maintain land throughout Imperial Spain and Mexico.
Also, Cortez successfully can be highly attributed to his translator, who was a former Aztec slave girl and likely hated the Aztecs and aided Cortez in building alliance networks overthrow Aztec.

Wont this even affect the conquest of south America as well. We can imagine a still surviving Inca in the south. Plus i think the biggest difference would be that much of central and south america might remain non christian or at least not fully christianised as we see in our timeline.
Ya know this whole scenario that's set up by this sets up a very interesting world that is very unexplored in alt history. Could really take it in some very odd intriguing directions
I don’t think people quite understand just how evil aztec society was, even compared to other societies at the time, completely sadistic
World would be worst places, based Spaniards did us all a favour.
You are one of my favoritr YouTube channels! Thank you for doing this. Im getting so much reference material for my alternate history book
Um, the Philippines were even futher away and the leader of the expedition was killed, so I think your premise on that is wrong. And, the disease factor cannot be over stated, look at the first reports of the Amazon cities and the next reports 50yrs later… do better!
The post smallpox angle is an interesting factor to consider. I remember in the fantasy series Temeraire, which is based on the premise of "What if the Napoleonic Wars had dragons?", there was one book where our heroes wound up in the still very much alive Incan Empire. In that version of history the Incan Empire survived the Spanish invasion because while smallpox devastated the human population, there was no such outbreak to devastate the local dragon population. And the local dragon population instead devastated the foreign invaders with great prejudice.
By the time of the early 19th century there was still enough dragons living in the empire to dissuade any foreigners from getting ideas of colonialism but the Inca were still very much a shadow of their former glory suffering from extreme economic hardship and huge manpower shortages across the empire
I'll be honest, with how miraculous the victory against the Azteca and Inca were, i think there's plenty of justification for all parties involved to believe the hand of God dealt in this. The history writers aren't necessarily known for their good writing with regards to first principles but i think that might be the influence of the editor.
