Boat electronics are incredible! The advancements in mapping and sonar give anglers incredible advantages, but only if they know how to interpret them. Today we’re taking a look at what different structures look like on the map, then we’re going to those places in person to see what they look like with the Humminbird Apex units.
Bass fishing has its own lingo and it can get overwhelming. Humps, ledges, spawning bays, pockets, flats, the list goes on forever. We’ve all received advice from a well meaning angler at the dock or the local tackle shop but secretly had no idea what they were talking about. The good news is, its not hard to learn and we’re about to show you everything you need to know to navigate the lake, find key structures, and locate fish.
Below you’ll find links to the best mapping you can buy. We’ve also included links to all the electronics and equipment we use on our boats, as well as some great budget friendly options to help you start locating bass on your next fishing trip. All the links go directly to Tackle Warehouse where you can see detailed photos and descriptions of each item.

What is some names of the apps that I can get on my phone at home.
Can you do a video of you finding spots and catching fish on them
One of the best videos y'all have done in my opinion thanks really learned a lot
Awesome info, but them weird structures could be old gardening beds since moving to Tennessee. I've learned most of our lakes are highland reservoirs before the daming there used to be a lot of communities, just a possibility… Great upload, Tim
Best video you have done. Thank you!
How deep do you catch bass in TN river
Awesome video.
🍺Well done. I enjoyed this one.👍
I have been fishing for 60 years. Always a little nugget and reminders 😊
Thanks Tim. I would love to see what a 'ditch' looks like, please. And how to set up & fish one. What is the difference between a ditch and a saddle? Thanks.
I have the Elite FS9s, I’ll tell you what, it’s a decent little unit, but I won’t be going back to Lowrance on my next boat, I’ll be going to birds
Hey Tim if your s.s was set at 150' and you were in 30' of water you were s.s. out to 120' correct? Did you only have 2 custom depth colors set red for 0-5' green 15' -20? Thanks for sharing very helpful.
Great job! 👍
Can you guys show us what bass look like hanging out around a bluff wall?
There’s so much good information in this video!! Thank you Tim for a great video!!!👏🏻👏🏻 I was wondering if maybe y’all could do the same type of video for natural lakes? Down here in NE Florida our lakes are pretty featureless and it’s seems like nobody ever makes videos on how to fish those types of lakes. Our lakes aren’t that deep and don’t have the contours like other lakes. it would be awesome to see how y’all breakdown a natural lake and show where’s good places to start and how fish move in lakes that aren’t in highland or lowland reservoir or river systems.
Great video. Could you do a video like this on a highland reservoir?
Great video and informative. Keep these up!
Is there an issue turning on your unit in your garage out of the water? I heard it wasn't good for the transducers is that correct?
What is the deepest depth over which you will fish a top water and expect success? thanks
Any recommendations for the bank guys who still want to know what the bottom looks like? Can those navionics cards go in a handheld gps or similar device?
I know there are some mobile apps (Fishbrain using a navionics product for one) as well but personally I’m not a huge fan of that one so I’d be interested in suggestions.
Building my 1st boat right now. Gonna be a huge learning curve operating my 1st bow mount and a tripleshot at the same time. Pollyanna just leave it in 2D till I learn the foot pedal lop
Tim… Great video… one request… in addition to what you covered in terms of fishing spots and topography, could you also explain how you fish these areas when you are doing it… do you fish/cast parallel to the drop off or perpendicular to it… how you approach the spot and start and move from there. You hit on it a little but would be interested in more details. Thanks and great job as always.
What lures or fishing techniques would you use to fish ledges/breaks that are 40'-50' deep?
I have smart strike chip and my helix doesn't look like that
Can you tell me the exact chip you are using
Also can you show how to transfer waypoints from Google earth to the unit
Hummingbird has some moves on the computer that I am not understanding
Thanks in advance
👏👏Thank you Tim,that was INCREDIBLE ❤👍
Awesome video! I have a much better understanding of lake contour terminology. 😊
Hey Tim, I was wondering if you guys can do a video on the Smart Strike part of the Lakemaster chip?
Thanks again
Eric

Excellant information. You all do a good job explaining electronics and mapping
When you’re fishing a ledge how do you set up to fish it? Do you set deep and cast shallow or do you set up shallow and cast deep?
Yea Tim the lower part of Watts Bar is a massive area!
Im not gonna lie i be watching theese videos even tho there is only peacock bass in my lake and no large mouth
Very good video and I'm pleased with how much I really knew, but my biggest problem is knowing where to exactly where to cast when I see fish on sonar or down imaging, help
Excellent explanations!!
Ideas for next time… rock piles and dock pilings. Great video very informative.
Got me a Tactical wake in Hitch was clacking the point today 😁
Awesome video thanks Tim
Enjoyed the video. Tim what mapping do you recommend for hds live? Im in South Tx
Fishing those ledges, are you catching fish out there in 40’ of water in the summer and if so how is it impacted by the thermocline?
What are you throwing in 40ft of water ???😅
How do you do this at home? I was told not to run the transducer out of water but idk how to turn the transducer off. Sorry just got my first boat a month ago.
According to Navionics Web App there are three submerged bridges in that arm. I think you may have been going over the footings for one of those bridges.
When you are fishing points, humps, ledges, etc… do u get shallow and fish deep, or get deep and throw shallow?
Those look like crossties I found some just like that on Guntersville in the mouth of Short Creek. It wasn't a train track but a trolley system to take goods from the Top of Sand Mountain to load on a barge in Short Creek.
This was a great vid! They always are!
Man. I love these guys. Clock work. Waiting for the next thanks for the hard work and info
How do you get the green dotted line in your creek channel
This video explained several terms I wasn’t sure about plus ledge fishing is something I haven’t been able to get my head around. This was very helpful. Thank you.
good explanation of these areas, hoping for more forward facing sonar videos when you get the chance, thanks !!
