Were MEDIEVAL People Actually RELIGIOUS?

Hi! In this video I will be discussing if people from medieval England were actually as religiously minded as what history books would have us believe, with a brief history of Christianity in England through the ages.

Enjoy!

  1. Great scholarship and insight. Editing is brilliant. You’re a real warrior scholar in the tradition of William Marshal. Come to the USA and teach the yanks a thing or two. Cheers!

  2. Great video. I loved everything you had to say. One thing that tickles me with Christianity is when people claim how it teaches people morals; which many of are admirable, that cannot be denied. However a major flaw is that it also teaches people.. if you're not with us, you're against, which is hardly moral. As you rightly stated, if you as an indiviual denounced god or the church you would be prosecuted and potentially executed. It also invites people's life's to be led by fear of eternal damnation which is no way to live.

  3. Great and nuanced explanation. It's a bit of a pet peeve of mine that ''historical films'' never show the importance of christianity in daily life in the middle ages. But also always show christianity the way we know it from After the concil of Trente. Eventhough medieval christianity would be so alien to us we might almost not even recognize it.
Also, small detail, barbarian didn't start out as meaning ''all enemies'', rather ''everyone who speaks gibberish-not Latin''. Coming from immitating strange languages with ''barbar'', a bit like ''blablabla''.
