Week 301 – Japan Vows to Fight to The End! – June 01, 1945

This week President Truman and his aides meet to discuss the use of the atomic bomb. In Japan, the imperial government vows to fight on even as Yokohama is turned to ash by firebombing. On Okinawa, Japanese 32nd Army withdraws from the defences of Shuri Castle but there is still plenty of hard fighting left for the Americans. There are US Navy command reshuffles and the stage is set for an Allied conference in Potsdam.

  1. Hey team! Do you draw on Gar Alperovitz for your discussion of the decision to drop the bomb?

Been a while since I read him, but I know he is very critical of James Byrnes and his influence over Truman. Byrnes, Alperovitz argues, wanted to use the bomb to check or curtail the involvement of the USSR.

Just some notes for you all, keep up the good work!

  2. Really interested to see where MacArthur wants the invasion to be. Imagine finding out that you came "this close" to having the whole enemy military "visiting" your house. Had happened all over Europe, Okinawa, etc, but you missed it by the slimmest of margins.

  3. That's the difference in the approach to war. The Soviets – the dictatorship of the workers spits on high-ranking opponents and destroys them if possible. The armies of the Allies, the owners of corporations and big political bosses, are not touched. That's probably why they tried to surrender to the Allies.

  4. @10:53 "The alternative to the atomic bomb was invading the islands"
Subsequently: @17:25 "Stalin told P. Truman & the Allied partners they were willing to invade the islands with their augmented resources in China in early August. The Allies could have stood back and supported them, thus not requiring the bomb being used, at that time, perhaps later. Also, the Allies were reportedly unaware Stalin knew about the atomic bomb. Let's face it, the Allies had a strong incentive to test their new weapon.

  5. I only just discovered this astonishing channel a year and a half ago. I really wanted to be caught up before the war ended and I'm finally here.

  6. 13:37 Midway (from a few years ago) was a terrible remake. But seeing Chester Nimitz's face makes me realise how absolutely spot on Woody Harrelson's casting was. Fantastic actor as well.
