We Played the first 6 Hours of Elden Ring – New Elden Ring 4K Gameplay Breakdown

Following the #EldenRing Closed Network Test in November 2021, we got our hands on a new build of the game for one final time before review – and there is a LOT to talk about. New locations, new NPCs, new character builds, new bosses – so let’s break it down, with new Elden Ring gameplay, as a treat. Turns out, being told you have exactly six hours to explore a brand new and expansive build of Elden Ring is both an exciting and a terrifying prospect. But, here are our impressions with a full unrestricted six hours with the game. #Eurogamer

  1. I'm always amazed how Aoife can articulately convey a lot of information in such an elegant & lyrical way. Not only is she a fan of From Software games, but she tries to know the lore going into each one and doesn't appear to view them as "just another assignment." This preview was so well-done given the limited footage, and I can't wait to see Team Eurogamer, stream Elden Ring on release!

  2. First, I'm already in love with this game. It looks so gorgeous and it's a SoulsBorne game. I'm definitely in need of playing it.

Second, Aoife (as always) does an amazing job at beautifully conveying everything to do with the game.

Third, 10:05 heh…holds you and gives you a buff. Heh…

  3. Aoife you must've been taught (or it's just natural) that when someone does a job, they should do it right & to the best of their abilities, because when I watch other channels I have my hand ready to click on something else but when I hear your voice I always sit back, relax, and watch the video in it's entirety.

  4. With your time with the game would you say The story is better told then the Dark Souls franchise.Easier to understand and follow? and are the side quest Story driven like The Witcher 3 or Skyrim? and NPCs to talk to?

  5. I really wanted to go into the game blind. However team Eurogamers videos are just too good to not watch. Looking forward to playing alongside like I did with the Dark Souls 3 let's play.

  6. Okay, I caved and watched this since I did watch Outside Xtra's video as well. I'm very excited about the game and I'm enjoying all the new information.

As you said at the end of the video, I'm glad it's a game I know I can take my time with. By that, I mean exploring the world as I wish and not having only a few options for where to go so that I'm forced into fights and then have few, or even no, areas to go off to explore instead and then return to the area that gave me trouble. The previous titles give you that option but not till later on (except for the option to explore the Hirata Estate in the past if the chained ogre gives you trouble in Sekiro), so if you hit a wall early on, there isn't really any other way to go except forward to keep hitting the wall, or backward to farm for souls/echoes to level up (I avoid doing that). I like that in Elden Ring we have the option to nope away from an area and still explore other areas of the world and make progress elsewhere.

My plan is to handle it how I handle other open world games: slow and methodical. Having a map that we can place markers on is a nice touch for that. I try not to be too much of a magpie since that can get me into trouble in both an open world game, in the sense of wandering off and forgetting what I was meant to be doing; and in a FromSoftware, in the sense that it usually ends up with a boss fight or a trap set by Patches.

I wonder if in the final version of the game changing our appearance via the dressing table in Fia's rooms will cost something. I know in Dark Souls 3 there's the option to change our appearance, but the cost messes with some other questline(s) players might not want to mess up.

That knight or whatever at the end reminds me a lot of the knights patrolling the High Walls of Lothric in Dark Souls 3. Better them than the black knights later on though.

  7. If anyone thinks they will finish their first playthrough of this game in 30 hours they are dreaming, maybe later on speedrunners will find ways to finish it in even shorter times but for now first playthroughs even if you skip side-content will probably be around 50 to 60 hours minimum.

  8. Ngl, but I really appreciate the well voiced story telling to convey what you experienced as best you could. I didn’t watch, but I listened along since I didn’t want to potentially see anything spoiler-ish. And I’ll say that just listening only made it more intriguing. And I cannot wait to play.

  9. There is something comforting about Aoife narrating and writing a video on a from software game like I know it's by somebody who clearly cares and loves these games and is excellent at explaining how the thing works and moves
