#####

6 years before the award winning ‘Red Dead Redemption’ showed the world what cowboy games could be, Rockstar took the first foray into a cinematic cowboy game with Red Dead Revolver.

A linear, cliché filled cowboy adventure with too many situational mechanics, a thin plot which finishes about 2 hours before the game actually ends and a protagonist more wooden than the fence posts.

So let’s replay the journey of Red Harlow and ask, Red Dead Revolver, was it actually any good?

As usual thank you to the supporters on Patreon and Twitch who keep the channel alive.

  1. I replayed this recently as I have owned it since childhood (my first M rated game!!). I was worried about how it would hold up but overall I really found it to be quite a blast! The core gameplay is just super punchy and satisfying. Personally I think the cover system is incredibly impressive for the time!

  2. I actually wasn’t looking at the note when you were complaining about how it was written versus how it was read, and I actually assumed that it was written as Sam being the person addressed. Lol you were totally right about that.

  3. Actually in Multiplayer some of the characters have different dead eye abilities, Pig Josh puts his metal plated arms arms and rushes at enemies until his TNT explodes just like in the boss fight.

  4. I remember playing this and thinking it was the best game ever made. Of course, I just had surgery and was on a lot of pain killers. I also found Alan Wake to be the greatest achievement in video game history on that same weekend for the same reasons.

  5. I'm 8 minutes into this video, and I already want to play it. Damn it, did it ever come out for PC? I'm guessing not, since I never bought it, and I bought most PC action shooters.

  6. A couple interesting tidbits about the 'Buffalo Soldier' character. He is the only remaining original character design from Capcom's earliest concept of Revolver, when it was being called "S.W.A.T." (Spaghetti Western Action Team). Also the name 'Buffalo Soldier' has a historical precedent for African American regiments in the old west, supposedly the plains Indians called them that due to associating their hair and skin color being similar to that of an American Bison/Buffalo.

  7. I like these reviews but I feel like you miss the point sometimes, the guy who actually killed Red's parents was only part of the problem, the governor and evil general guy were the reason someone was sent to kill his family in the first place, killing the canon arm guy lackey won't stop the corruption and the people benefitting from the family's murder will get to enjoy the spoils, it makes perfect sense to go after them, it's also a common trope in alot of spaghetti westerns that there's more behind the scenes and getting revenge against one guy doesn't solve the problem, it keeps going after the hero is exhausted because they have to set things right. It doesn't matter if he's never seen the bad guys before and it clearly wasn't in revenge for the guy he just met who got hit with the dynamite, that just gives him more incentive to do it and lets him know the bad guy is in that direction while adding more reasons that he's evil.

Playing the evil general lets you know what he was up to and how he fits into the story with gameplay and shows you he's dangerous because now you think of his capabilities as a player character who are often the strongest, most capable or luckiest characters in games, it would feel alot cheaper if he was only mentioned briefly and would be ham fisted to have someone talk about how he won the battle and all the little things he does.

Also what everybody else mentioned too, "Good luck, Saam" she had a tone in her voice different for the name to show she's upset he abandoned her too.
He held the bank manager up because the lady mentioned he knew about a mountain of gold immediately before so he tried to intimidate the guy for information as well as the money he's owed for his work, the competition he didn't need the money, he knew the governor was going to be there or maybe one of his lackeys,
and it was set up that he wanted the woman to win because he told her about the competition after visiting her at the ranch, while he could see it burning down and she said it's all she had.
Raiding the caravan that had the gold was to get at the general guy.
So obviously he wants/needs gold but the gold was linked to everyone who killed his family, for the gold, that gets him closer to rooting them out.

And not every mechanic needs to be repeated, it's good that different characters have their own dead eye attack to strengthen their themes, kicking over tables for cover could be useful for some other stuff but you said the cover system is worse than just running around so you never use it, shooting people's legs to make them drop stuff is what you do with guys chucking barrels and boulders at you but not much else, saving people by doing that would get annoying if you did it more

Yes some things could be re-used to make the game better but it's ok to have some differentiation for theming without repeating it or trying to work it all together in a game that's trying to mimic the cowboy hero shoot bang man.

Just feels like you focus too hard on some things that don't matter as if they're major issues and some things you plainly didn't get but list it as a fault anyway like the second half of the plot.

  8. I love your content Josh but but there were some things in this episode that I really did not agree with. I won't talk about the Good Luck -Sam bit as other commenters have already discussed that. First, that was Governer Griffon in Diego's mission at the end, giving context to Darren, Diego, and Griff all being villains who were responsible for Nate and Falling Star's deaths. That's why the game wasn't over after you killed Darren. Darren is simply Griffon and Diego's lacky. It felt like you weren't paying much attention to the story. Also you made it sound like Buffalo Soldier died at the end even though you can clearly see in the video he's fine. Actually, Jack Swift died but you didn't even mention it.

As for the gameplay, while it absolutely has its problems, I feel as though you are viewing the game through a much more modern lens, instead of taking your time to read the manual, and treat it like a PS2 game of the time. You mentioned the game feeling arcadey whilst at the same time complaining over new mechanics being introduced to never be shown again. I feel for game like Revolver that is a hub based, linear arcade shooter, this is fine. It's not about having completely fleshed out mechanics for deep rewarding gameplay, each level is a new arcade shooting gallery with a couple of new mechanics sprinkled in to keep things fresh. Also the Pacificador isn't the best sidearm in the game, it's the Twin Revolvers and the Scorpion Revolver.

I think I had some other criticisms but these were the main ones I wanted to highlight. Like I said before, I love your channel and content, but this episode honestly wasn't it.

  9. I thought Jack died off screen during the final level just before you get to the rooftop showdown with Griffon.. Maybe I just played this level so much because I hated going for the golden gun cheat reward and that's what I thought happened.

  10. 31:50 – i disagree… it sounds to me like someone reading it the correct way but just in an exasperated and hurried way BECAUSE HER RANCH IS BEING BURNED DOWN lol. I wouldn't bother to pause for emphasis there either i'd just read it in a rush and get to my ranch. Gotta disagree with you on this as an eng/law double degree student 😛 Just my opinion though, but she sounds like she actually read it perfectly for the character in that situation.
