In 2009 I was 38 and had been hearing this song since I was 5. It came out in 1976, when I was crawling around on the floor of my mother's AMC Gremlin (green, of course) and this song was playing on some AM radio station. I owned it on a vinyl 45 by the time I was 8 or 9, my parents had it on an 8 track, I owned it on cassette tape in my early teens, and then on a CD by the time I started college. This is probably one of the first songs I ever pirated on Napster.
At 38, sitting in that audience, I likely would have been stunned that they were able to carry off the performance this well for at least half the song before I would have been jamming to it. Good for them!
I think that Iron Maiden is better after 30 years. These boys are good. love Bruce´s voice
Kerry is there! 95% of their whole catalog was written by him. Quit the band back in the late 80's. Must have been a guest appearance.
I looooove this song! I've been loving this for decades. And when it became the "Supernatural" anthem song it became even more special to all of us fans of the series.🤘
These guys were one of my first live shows with the Outlaws in 77’. I was 14 then and believe me, nobody was just standing there then!! They were fantastic then and are still incredible!!
Great reaction!👏👏
Saw them live 3xs..Last time was about 5 yrs ago.. When they sing " I was soaring ever higher " , the whole audience chimes in " But I FLEW TO HIGH" The band loved it!!!! Great concert , outstanding musicians!!!
Beth , you need to check out DUST IN THE WIND!!! The band is TOP NOTCH!!!
you are absolutely georgeous…you bear a striking resemblance to nicole kidman..im sure youve heard that b4 lol
Their album "Point of know return" is the album love the most. I know there are people who wold say no but it is for me. Dust in the wind, great song, but I would recommend "Hoplessly human", Closet chronicles", "Point of know return", "The lightning´s hand" and some others from this album.
Saving people hunting things the family business
Some songs are timeless. This is one.
Most people don't know that this was the closing theme of the 1977 movie "Heroes" and the lyrics hit so much harder when heard in that context. The movie was thoroughly underrated and well worth watching if you have a chance; one of Sally Field's greatest performances, IMO.
Kerry Livgren is an amazing song writer. (The guy with the long mustache). He wrote most of their biggest hits.
Kansas hit it big with this song. I wore out the Best of Kansas 8-track, playing it every day whether in the car or at home in my bedroom as a teen. This is definitely a great version, as good as the studio recording.
You should listen to John Elefante. He was lead singer for Kansas in the 80s. People compared his vocal skill to Dennis De Young.
Kansas is on my list of favs, to be sure! Their song Dust in the Wind was one of my late wife's favorite songs, and mine as well!
A wonderful performance and great reaction. Thank you Beth! Now that you have heard the original you should listen (& react) to VoicePlay's acapella cover of this song. I know you will love it.
Actually, Kerry Livgren wrote this song, as well as at least half their music. Billy Greer wasn't in the original line-up. The original group was: Steve Walsh – Lead vocals & keyboards (left and came back), Kerry Livgren, guitars and keyboards (left to do Christian music, Robby Steinhart – Violin (left and came back), Phil Ehart – drums, Rich Williams – guitar (the one with the eye patch), and Dave Hope – Bass (left to become a minister). They've had a couple of different line-ups since, but I prefer the original (from the beginning through their Audio-Visions album).
Steve recently retired because his voice was going. Robby died a couple of years ago. Dave is still a minister. Kerry was playing lead guitar on this video (I was surprised to see him with the band again). Rich was still there as was Phil. The others came in around the time of the Power album.
I got to see them in 1980. Absolutely AWESOME. I love their Two For The Show live album. It was about as close as you could get to studio on a live album. You can hear who is playing which instrument. It's great.
Sorry they were just as good…..but missing the other lead singer who was fabulous on the violin as well
SuperJam 82' in Memphis I saw them with REO Speedwagon and Joan Jett & the Blackhearts & Survivor…..incredible stadium show!!
Should have heard them in their prime. They still sound great, but back in the day – perfection
Best album covers!
Livgren genius
I was fortunate enough to get to see them in ‘94 when they played for the first time since 77 in Topeka, Ks(their hometown)
Thanks for shining some light on this tune and transcendent band. You must check out the earlier versions–harmony not as full or refined but you'll enjoy Steve Walsh's frenetic energy and the range he had back then https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s38ignmTqFQ
Would absolutely love to hear you sing this song , Beth !!!!!! It would be epic !
Steve Walsh and Kansas turned me into a progressive music lover. Super sic vocals and instrumentation by all members!
Steve Walsh- lead singer. Certainly one of the greatest of all time, but really not recognized that way. The violinist is one of the guys singing harmony, just outstanding. Steve Walsh is in his 60's here. Lost a little range, but still very good.
If you would listen to the original version when Steve Walsh was 35 years younger you would freaked out…he still sounds great but time has definitely caught up.
Dust in the wind
https://youtu.be/s38ignmTqFQ This live version from Canadian summer jam is 50 X better than the one I watched U need to watch it . because I see Joe Walsh play bongos in edition to keyboards an the audio is better
Hi beth
Can you please react on this Amazing Shreya And K S Chitra Duet Performance Please :
https://youtu.be/HEfqBj548Ks
I think music is to perfect these days. But I guess that's just me.
definitely agree about Steve Walsh ..great vocalist kind of underrated actually
Old bands tend to draw an audience of old fans, so they're not going to be wild anymore.
There are too many Kansas from the '70s to name, but The Wall and Song for America are two great songs. Cheyenne Anthem is an other.
This is a rock masterpiece
So happy you reviewed this! You really need to hear an earlier version of this with younger voices.
Thank you so much for making this video of Kansas !!!!! They were and still are Amazing !!!! There is a Documentary of Kansas that came out years ago that was done when they were still very young, I believe it was on HBO… Perhaps it is still available to watch… They are indeed, from Kansas… 🙂 A great, great, band, sound as great as their recordings, live !!! Wait until you hear their "Dust in the Wind"…… 🙂 Great review of their work !!!! Thank you !!!
As a vocal coach i URGE you to look at 'The Wall' by Kansas. Steve Walsh's voice is INCREDIBLE!! Best melodic rock song ever. Better than Dont Stop Believing.
why 2009 live version? who idiot suggested her this, no offence.
