VAN LIFE: Reality. Not every scenic drive is scenic.

I’m the luckiest person in the world to have the experiences I’ve had on the road for the last 8 months. With the exception of the wind in the first month of traveling, weather has been amazing – you can see how gorgeous it’s been in my videos. That’s due in part to using weather apps to plan my travel and avoiding bad weather as much as possible.

However, things don’t always go perfect. In this short video, signs that said, “Scenic Drive” took me off course to disappointing results. The first one was educational but not as scenic as the sign indicated, the second one was not as spectacular as I’d hoped.

Were these two drives worth the time and gas? What do you think?

  1. Birds fly by echo location, much like bats. The vibration and noise from the turbines messes that up. They’re not dumb. They’re encountering manmade technology God didn’t equip them to handle! Successive generations do learn to avoid the turbines but please don’t belittle the birds!

  2. Though it can appear as though they’re turning at a slow, almost relaxed pace, wind-turbine blades actually move very rapidly: The outer tips of some turbines' blades can reach speeds of 179 mph (288 kilometers per hour) and can easily slice off an eagle's wing. Go stand next to one and you will be able to see how fast they’re actually moving.

When hawks, falcons and eagles are flying, they're usually looking down at the ground for prey, not glancing up to watch for a knifelike blade whipping down on them from above.

  3. I saw wind turbines on the mountainsides at the California border. I thought my van was falling apart, so I went really slow. Then I got the bright idea of rolling my window down. It was the wind turbines, not my van They were crazy loud there!

  4. That's because the type that does harm birds are set up differently with wider blades and word differently. Which is the whole reason we have those beautiful ones you saw on that beautiful drive. And I'm sorry, but nothing in here looked anything but amazing to me, I don't understand what the problem is or why you wouldn't think it's just a scenic as any other type of scenic route. I mean I don't love the routes through the florida swamps, but I can accept it's beautiful and other people enjoy it. Personally a field of wind turbines or solar panels sounds absolutley wonderful. Esp compared to driving past the homes of migrant farm workers and seeing the beautiful fields next to their hovels.
