Caption sheet information with this raw wartime Navy footage says it was made aboard USS Hornet (CV-12), probably in April 1945. Thereโs some gorgeous Kodachrome sunset footage as Hellcats recover on the Hornet; donโt miss it! Other views show flak in the sky protecting the U.S. fleet, as splashes are seen in the water. Aircraft operations include a Curtiss Helldiver taking a wave-off. F6F Hellcats and F4U Corsairs are depicted. A carrier of the Essex class fires its guns. Later, the aircraft carrier is replenished underway from a navy tanker.
Hornet can be seen in dazzle splinter camouflage paint in some scenes; a wartime addition.

Wonderful find. Thanks. Two things stand out: 1st that Hellcat didn't have a cover to the gunbay. 2nd – those were massive sandwiches.
This is definitely some incredible film footage and the music is perfectly matched to the action.

Great stuff very good to watch.
Fantastic WWII archive footage. Thanks once again Mr Johnsen! As you mentioned in another comment, hope you are ready, Christmas is getting closer! Another great one. I noticed the flag at have mast twice and I wonder if this dates the film to the death of FDR? The camo colors on the island are terrific, many great destroyers and in a couple of scenes ships are using their blinker light. I have come to the conclusion that the Hellcat looks better with its 150 gal drop tank! Thanks as always for your work and the post!!!
Wonderful stuff,..
