USA: Please Stop Shutting Down Race Tracks

Cleetus McFarland and his Freedom Factory, Irwindale Speedway with their bankruptcy, and Atlanta Dragway have all gone through the same fear; getting shut down. As the motorsport community continues to change and adapt, the days of 70 year old tracks are dying. So what’s the future of tracks and is it any good?

  1. I will miss the days of drag strips with vending machines that look like they came out of Fallout 3 and the luke warm fries that were $4 to be replaced with $19 Miller Lites and $24 chicken tenders but hey, I guess we'll take what we can get, right? 🥲 What do you think about the future of tracks? Let me know below!

  2. Similar instance in my community where locals built an awesome shooting facility then had a couple move into the lot next door, built a house and now the range gets multiple complaints a month solely from that couple complaining about noise. When THEY were the ones who built a house next to a gun range. Cant fix stupid

  3. New England Dragway in New Hampshire almost closed for this same reason. Investors were going to buy the land and put a mall there. It didn't end up happening thankfully. Some other tracks in New England are surrounded my neighborhoods but the track itself is more in the middle of the property allowing for reduced noise outside the track.

  4. It’s mostly drag strips and circle tracks. If the dragstrip stop running the stupid jet, cars and coal rolling, dumb ass vehicles, everything would probably be OK. There’s a lot of circuit tracks being built all around the world. Even in Michigan they’re adding a new racetrack. If you want to go in a straight line or around and taking consistent left turns you might have something to be worried about.

  5. Australia has a massive event called Summernats, and this year the local government closed the track for whatever reason, so guess what, everyone that wanted to race or do burnouts took to the street. Again, closing the safe and regulated tracks seems like it’s just gonna cause more problems than not, including if track entry fees skyrocket. Because it already is…

  6. In the city I live in (Adelaide, Australia) we have the Adelaide 500 and the government got rid of it. When voting for new state government, one of them promised to have it back. Pretty much they saw the economic hit the city got after losing one of our last big event (Adelaide has been losing events for awhile). And so when we got it back it was the best Adelaide 500.

  7. So you're saying the future is good because super bougie countryclub tracks are still remote enough to stay alive?
That seems like it misses the entire point of the topic. If anything it makes racing on closed courses more exclusive than ever before.

  8. With the expansion of city's everywhere its almost inevitable that tracks are going to become suburbanite Karen swarmed 😕 it's a shitty thought initially, but if we want our hobbies, livelihoods, our live shows, to continue its time for some of these "to be" track owners to instead of buying old tracks build new ones away from suburbia and make them better than the others 🤷‍♂️
It's easier said than done 100% but with the right people doing it, LEGAL motorsports can still live on!
I just wish district officials would just say to these people "you bought a house near a race track, you looked at the property and more than likely seen the signs along the roadway stating "such n such speedway turn here" while viewing your property before purchase, they bring tourism to our area yearly which is more than we collect on yourself for land tax, they are staying 🤷‍♂️"

  9. Motorsport resorts and country clubs don’t really work though for most people because in order to drive you need to spend $50k+ a year on a cheap one for a membership otherwise you’re not driving. It just doesn’t work for most people

  10. So these people complain and gets tracks closed down, with no tracks close by or expensive to go to the direct result you going to unfortunately see more start doing things on the street. We need to protect the tracks as this will be the result, also if the world is moving to EV's how long will it be till the loud cars are gone and the appliances are racing.

  11. Not sure how much of an idea this would work out to be but why not form an Association or something like that? the goal is to help preserve these short tracks and pull up money r restoration and upgrades or something of that sort it's just an idea. if you happen to put a lot of voices behind a good cause I think it might work out. let me know what you guys think.

  12. and they still cant get Nashville fairgrounds to shut down. I find it stupid that people move next to a race track. like come on have common sense. I have a track nearby that was built in a neighborhood (OLD NEIHBOROHOOD) nobody complains. well they got the dragstrip closed buts that's besides the point.

  13. The only track that made sense for this was Texas World Speedway, even though I loved that track to death in Need for Speed Prostreet, it was in such disrepair that fixing it would cost an absolute fortune, I know one of the bankings couldn't even be used because of how bad it was so they only did the infield layout for years until it shut down, but race tracks in perfectly good shape shouldn't be targeted here

  14. Greedy land developers don't really care what they ruin as long as long as they can make huge profits off whatever land they can get their hands on. It doesn't matter if it's commercial or residential.

  15. they don't want us to race on the street but will shut down the tracks in the area( makes perfect sense for controlling fun)… If your going to complain about noise DONT LIVE NEAR A FUNKING RACE TRACK, I lived 2 miles from a race track for 20years every weekend they would have a race and the whole area around the track didn't care, a real community but due to family reasons I had to move I miss listening to the cars racing around the track you could even hear the announcers calling the action a racers heaven.
