Elon has never been shy about the Mars mission being one way in the beginning, if they survive at all. "It could very possibly cost many lives until we get everything figured out." It will never be entirely safe, space travel is somewhere between risky & treacherous. I find it humorous that people are fretting over these concerns when we don't have the data on the "Final" Stqrship design yet. Any plans made at this point, would certainly be speculative.
Let's focus on evolving the Prototypes & maybe, just maybe, today's problems won't exist tomorrow
The one thing Elon will tell you is that this is a dangerous trip and the first travelers will be going one way. I've always believed that the Starship (upper stage) was the carrier compartment that gets you off the ground and on its way to mars. I'm convinced that it will soon take a nuclear vehicle of some kind to push and pull you between planets more quickly – a nuclear tug. I think NASA knows that as well and so has invested in nuclear engine development with some reportedly good results. Within ten years, if not before, that's what will speed up travel and get you back and forth between planets. The first Starships will likely be delivering infrastructure. By the time they get there and need to takeoff, all they'll need is enough fuel to get off the planet. If not a Starship, they may use a smaller rocket to deliver you to awaiting tandem Starships (for purpose of creating artificial gravity) with tug where they will do the same thing returning to earth. I don't think any of this is pie in the sky and I do believe it is doable. What the heck, I knew the Starship was doable because I watched Buck Rogers as a kid. In the next week or two you'll look at a video of the newest Starship buzzing about the sky getting us ready for that first trip to mars:-) Hope is eternal as is conjecture.

send multiple units to mars, manufacture ch4 and o2 and use the onboard tanks for storage. power to be supplied by something like kilopower reactors. perhaps three per ship. automated systems to deploy reactors and lay infrastructure for manned missions. while this is going on develop crew rated starships and fueling station to be put in orbit to send ships to the moon to manufacture methane and oxygen to be sent to said fueling station with dedicated tankers. fill the crewed starship from the fueling station and carry your happy ass off to mars. rinse and repeat.

The plan has always been to send numerous unmanned supply ships ahead of time to Mars. Those ships would contain some robotic self-assembly and self-maintenance capability to hopefully prepare a habitat in advance for the first Mars visitors.
The return trip fuel will be manufactured on mars per the Sabatier fuel process as described by Elan years ago
