When Russia began its attack on Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city, in February of 2022,
many people expected the city to fall in days. But the Ukrainians refused to surrender.

Now, a new FRONTLINE documentary tells the story of the battle for Kharkiv through the experiences of those who stayed in the city, despite the ever-present threat of the war.

Filmed during the first three months of the war, the documentary chronicles the experiences of people living through Russia’s attack: the displaced families trying to survive underground; the civilians caught in the fight; and the first responders risking their lives to help others.

“Ukraine: Life Under Russia’s Attack” is a Basement Films production for GBH/FRONTLINE in association with Channel 4. Filmed, produced and directed by Mani Benchelah and Patrick Tombola; produced in Ukraine by Volodymyr Pavlov; directed in London by Teresa Smith. The editor is Agniezska Liggett. The production manager is Leah Downs. The executive producers are Ben de Pear, Edward Watts and Cate Blanchett. The executive producer and editor-in-chief for FRONTLINE is Raney Aronson-Rath.

  6. America: life with perpetual war since 1941. PBS doesn't care because they're one of spokes in the wheel of the Ministry of Propaganda who promotes war so death and hatred to mankind poisons their brainwashed minds. Establishment is back, normalcy has returned so the world free falls into chaos as they beat the drums of war across the lands. These are some sociopathic people programming more War Pigs with their Mass Formation Psychosis.

  8. I'm grateful to PBS for presenting this documentary. I can only watch it in small segments, however, before falling apart in tears. It's important to witness the human cost of war. it also makes me question more closely the succession of distant, foreign wars waged by my own country, the United States. This view of war presented here — up close and personal –is something I needed to see as a global citizen, and it makes me hate war all the more. Diplomacy, diplomacy, diplomacy. Please.

  9. We Americans could have done a lot more to have prevented most of this damage early in this war. We could have given those weapons so much sooner and some of this could have been prevented. If you look at the effect himars has had in the short time period it’s been in country it’s insane and speaks volumes to how weak Russia always was even before the war. We should be giving Ukraine whatever it needs because if we can’t stop Russia overtaking Ukraine, we might as well just hand the Chinese Taiwan on a silver platter.

  10. Riddell me this; I am currently fighting a war to keep and protect my home, while at the same time I am buying someone else's home of 32 year out from under them and essentially leaving them homeless. Who am I?

  11. The US has given upwards of 60 to 70 billion. Enough is enough with the inflation. Where are all the countries in Europe giving all their military supplies and billions and billions. Ukraine is not going to win this war.

  12. Frontline is ground truth. It’s the MOST IMPORTANT source of information. It is indisputably accurate, honest and unimpeachable. In this age of ‘post-truth’ active lies and liars and blatant propaganda the real people of the world can turn to Frontline for at least a bit of reality. I thank them!! The organization is a bulwark of democracy. I only wish there were 100 Frontlines in operation in every language of people. Thank you all Frontline journalists from bottom of my heart. The need for simple truth is paramount. Keep up the awesome work. The ‘Truth’ might set us free IF- if we can obtain it. The ‘people’ are desperate for honest factual reporting!!!

  13. I hate to say it; but this is what can happen when a Russian hijacks an American genius to help him control or influence millions of people and a movie star takes over! It's happened here and it will continue to happen…

  16. The 32+ dead in Gaza today flood my mind as I watch Ukraine persevere under the kind of bombardment Palestinians also know all too well, and for far longer.

Putin: "There is no such thing as a separate Ukrainian people, they are one with the Russians. The state of Ukraine is an artificial creation, a fluke of history that should be grateful to Russia for allowing it to exist.”

Golda Meir: "There was no such thing as Palestinians. When was there an independent Palestinian people with a Palestinian state?"

"When were Palestinians born? What was all of this area before the First World War when Britain got the Mandate over Palestine? What was Palestine, then? Palestine was then the area between the Mediterranean and the Iraqian border. East and West Bank was Palestine. I am a Palestinian, from 1921 and 1948, I carried a Palestinian passport. There was no such thing in this area as Jews, and Arabs, and Palestinians, There were Jews and Arabs. […] I don't say there are no Palestinians, but I say there is no such thing as a distinct Palestinian people."

  18. War of aggression is unacceptable in every way. The ultimate price for starting such conflicts should be death by firing squad of entire governments and all of their families. Being a bystander in such a war is no different than giving it a green light.

  20. It’s quite entertaining to watch Ukraine become a graveyard for russian imperialism. Fascist russia’s economy has been slowly crumbling for over a decade and is now in a deep recession. Even before their genocidal war against Ukrainians, they had the world’s 2nd highest suicide rate, 3rd highest alcoholism & drug overdose death rate and number 1 world’s highest COVID excess death rate🥇😂 Now thanks to sanctions, russians are going bankrupt and dying at record speed. Even motherussia’s only pride and joy, their huge military is getting absolutely decimated & exposed on the battlefield by the much smaller Ukrainian forces. russian fascists are as murderous as nazi German soldiers but also more drunk, cowardly and incompetent. It makes me so proud to know over 41,000 russian fascist invaders have been “demilitarized” thanks to Western weapon systems (Javelins, NLAWs, Bayraktars, Stingers, M777s, HIMRS) used by Ukrainian warriors. Not only we save Europe from cancerous russian imperialism but also prove fascist russia’s military is a joke against modern NATO technologies. 🇺🇦🤘🏻
