  1. Man, you want to go back to an old squad-based auto-battler, check out the Ogre Battle series. It had everything: a bizarre morality system, which influenced your class; weird translations from the original Japanese; classic rebel prince (or princess!) fighting off an invading sorcerer.
    Note: Units promoted based on XP and alignment. Units became more 'evil' if they repeatedly beat up enemies weaker than themselves, while they became more 'good' aligned if they fought foes of equal(?) or higher threat level. It was another layer of mircomangement that you had to play around.
