Thanks for answering my question at 2:29:47 . I was trying to ask how, in particular, Bastiat and later Austrian economists like Hazlitt and others talk about the "seen and the unseen." Hazlitt uses the arguments of sweaters, saying that maybe foreign sweaters are cheaper and that domestic sweater producers petition to get tariffs set up so they can compete with foreign sweater producers. Hazlitt argues that letting the foreign sweater producer sell at the cheaper price means that economically, the domestic resources can be diverted towards actually productive ends (since domestically we are not good at making sweaters in this example) and the consumer now has more money in his pocket to buy other things he otherwise wouldn't be able to if the tariffs were in place. As someone coming to Orthodoxy and wrestling with the libertarianism that I held, the conclusions I have come to are:
1. We can't measure everything in terms of dollars and wealth accrual, especially as Christians. So yes, while the consumer has more money in his pocket and maybe things are cheaper, is it worth it to depend on foreign goods and places like China? And sure, if the consumer has more money in his pocket, there is no guarantee that he will purchase domestic goods. There is a real possibility of becoming dependent on foreign goods as we are now. If one thing in China, for example, is cheaper to produce than here, then it stands to reason that MANY different things will flood in from China. And I think that's why we see lots of cheap Chinese crap on store shelves these days.
2. Austrians talk about subjective value theory and subjective value scales in relation to economic action. Therefore, what if one realizes that, yes, there is an economic cost to not being dependent on foreign goods, but the value of domestic goods for many economic actors goes beyond the monetary? What if local/domestic pride in any given industry has a value worth the cost of tariffs? What if people having work they are proud of in a community is worth more than having a Walmart full of cheap goods down the street? Under the subjective value theory, this is a perfectly valid motivation and desire, and I think the libertarian would have to concede that he is placing everything on monetary value here and cannot force the other person to accept his subjective valuation and metric, namely simple financial gains.
3. The Austrian economist perspective is insightful in describing what is happening economically, but you cannot derive an ought from it. This leads to the points I already made above. Sure, there is an economic cost to tariffs, but observing that cost doesn't mean we must definitively choose to have tariffs or have open and free trade with other nations. I realized that as a libertarian, I was unjustly moving from observing the economy to what ought to be based on my preference for financial gain (at the time of holding my libertarian views). The idea that financial gain is good is just assumed to be objectively true by the libertarian and then every argument is built on that assumption. But under the subjective value theory held by Austrian Economists and libertarians, It's just as arbitrary and subjective to say that it is better to prefer domestic industries over foreign for the sake of local/domestic societal unity and pride and so forth. Maybe flooding the market with cheap goods breeds vain consumerism, and we decide that this is not good for the moral health of our community? Under the Austrian view, you can't say that such subjective preferences are necessarily "wrong." You can only describe the potential outcomes should those actions be taken.
Sorry for the long comment. As I said in my super chat, I'm trying to sort this out. Maybe you, Jay, or someone else in the comments here can tell me if this seems reasonable.

I certainly do not agree whole heartedly with Oswald Spengler's deterministic view of the world although you could say that the money power does seem to lack enough prudence not to eventually destroy itself thus leading to a new Ceasarism. What I found interesting was his contrast of the idea of good and evil in the east vs this pragmatism in the west of good vs bad. Which I understand as might makes right . Whatever wins the competition. I read Foreign Affairs the CFR roundtable journal and the world view is framed as nothing more than a game.
Jay you mentioned the chain of reasoning of nature/nurture in the liberal paradigm, and how it is tied to the assumption that if people were just "correctly" educated, they wouldn't be evil. From a philosophical standpoint, how would we know for sure that "education" in that liberal sense itself isn't a part of man's ignorance/nature?
