Trouble On Board! Fire Department To The Rescue, Plus Starting A GP38 Loco! #trains | Jason Asselin

When the Escanaba & Lake Superior Railroad left their train on the main and proceeded north to the Iron Mountain Fire Department, I knew something must be wrong. Firemen pulled a firehose to ELS 402 and began helping the crew on the train. After they were done, the crew started ELS 402 (GP38) and went back for the train.

  1. The firefighters are filling the water reservoir tank. Since locomotive radiators use only water and the water level lowers below normal a low water light and alarm will sound in the cab and the locomotive is designed to shut down. ELS is fortunate to have the cooperation of Iron Mountain FD and the location is convenient, track side. Good catch on this one.😎🚂✝

  2. Well if the tracks run right next to the Firehouse, that was good strategic thinking on the part of the crew. Good communication, cuz the firefighters were ready when they arrived.

  3. I’m counting all of the FRA, OSHA, and Railroad safety violations going on here. FRA expects Engines to leave the yard with a good water glass, and no leaks.
The crewman swung down off the side of the boardwalk. No vests. Other than that, it’s pretty cool.
I’ve never been very impressed with this railroad’s professionalism.
