What everyone fails to talk about in their analysis of self defense shotguns is at typical engagement ranges of a civilian shooting (arms length) is buck shot is still seated in its plastic wad, ballistically it acts like a loosely packed slug. It’s still better in lethality than handguns but since it has all the disadvantages of rifles (length), alternate loading (buck, slug, buck Etc) exposes the defender to litigation issues and tactical reloading requires lots of practice consideration of rifle use as primary self defense tool would be warranted.
