Thoughts On F1 2023: Williams and Alpine

In the second video in my end of season F1 waffle series, I give a few of my thoughts on how Williams and Alpine did in 2023. Plus, a look at the season stats and averages for Alex Albon, Logan Sargeant, Pierre Gasly and Esteban Ocon.

  1. I thought Albon showed he was quick when he was a Redbull. I remember he had some bad luck, named Lewis…😂 but I always thought he got shafted too quickly there. So I'm glad to see Williams turning the corner and I hope his teammate starts to pick up his pace. He seems like a nice guy and that he has the talent.

Alpine, I was kind of disappointed that Ocon wasn't crashing more into his teammate. It just seemed out of character and who doesn't love a good crash between teammates? I know Alonso loved being under threat constantly by Ocon…. LOL

I wonder if Gasly and Ocon are hanging together now cooking together.

  2. What I find troubling is that JV is an ex-head of strategy and imho Williams made several major strategic errors this year. Austria sprint race and Zandervoort GP are the first to come to mind.

  3. Williams was my 2nd team this year. I wasn't to pleased with Logan, being an American I had hopes for him as a fellow Country men. The resigning was a surprise to me and welcome one though. I've always been an Albon fan and seeing what he did this season, he literally picked the Williams up and threw it on his back and carried it to that position. James I think is the right person along with Albon to bring Williams back.

  4. Alpine’s season felt worse because they fired the race management. They could afford to do that because they where kinda nowhere in 6th, when their primary issue was engine power, but the engine manufacturer was the one doing the firing and the engine manager is the one left in charge. What a coincidence! 😹

  5. Gasly’s radio comments were nonsense. How do you address Gasly feeling he’s been undercut by design when its isolated finger trouble by a mechanic magnified by his sense of grievance?

  6. Worth mentioning, for damage costs Latifi was about 3.3 million (1 million less than sargeant) last year, however mick schumacher had greater damage costs in both of his seasons in f1 than sargeant did this year (~4.9 million and ~4.4 iirc)

  7. Ocon was the unluckyest driver this season , so many DNFs most of the time mechanical, 1 time taken out by his teammate, without this issues he could have finished 10 instead of stroll, but would in any way won the teammate battle (even just the points he lost in Singapore would be enough to win the temmate battle),
Albon had a great season, but its hard to judge because he never had a real milestone teammate in Williams (Latifi,Sargent) …

  8. Not going to lie, Ocon's second half of the season just felt a bit meh. It did feel like Gasly had an edge pace wise. Not saying Ocon had a 'bad' season, just felt like in the second half of the season he dropped off in form.

  9. I used to think Ocon was an asset, but he’s so toxic and incapable of working w/teammates that he’s more a liability than anything else. The number of times he lost places in order to block teammates (happened with Gasly, Ocon and Perez – he wasn’t close enough to Ricciardo to ever be able to block him) and he’s not close to good enough to get away with that sort of attitude. He also doesn’t have any real fan following or sponsors. So, I’m surprised he is too myopic to see he’s basically endangering his career.

His self-sabotaging nature is hilariously analogous of the Enstone team itself.

  10. An avg finish of 11.11 is really impressive. Anyway, Dorilton Capital deserves some credit too. I expected them to just come in, strip assets, invest the minimum possible and sell the team once it had milked all they could, but they’re really investing and not interfering. Of course, it’s not from the kindness of their heart. They know the team can gain a ton of value with such a historic name if they make it a winning team again. But, hey, that motivation is fine if it brings Williams back to contender status.

  11. RE: Logan Deputy – Every driver to become a star was impressive as a rookie. That’s why I don’t buy the “they just need time” excuse let alone why they would ever keep him. I’m hoping and expecting his new contract will allow Williams to replace at any time they like during the season if he hasn’t improved A LOT by race 2 or 3 of next season.

  12. Gasly’s Australia crash was certainly his fault. He looked liked like his old self just rejoining the track in an insane manner in a bid to not lose too many places. But he showed restraint not having contract with Ocon with Esteban focusing more on blocking Pierre than moving ahead.

  13. I don't know if you see these (because your busy with Christmas stuff), but could you do a video where you see how well each team would do if their weaker driver was on the same level as their stronger driver. For example would Williams have moved up if Logan did as well as Alex? How far ahead would Red Bull be if Perez helped double Red Bull's score.
This would be a magical scoreboard where you don't have to calculate how position changes would affect the season, but since Lewis and George were not too far apart, we could see some interesting results like AM moving up the leaderboard.

  14. Albon has done a phenomenal job at Williams. The influence of the new TP had been the biggest surprise as far as I am concerned. James has really seemed to come in and modernize the team processes to bring them closer to what a relevant F1 team should have. (If all the reporting has been accurate)
