What’s so interesting about Thorfinn is that deep down he really doesn’t want violence. Yes he wants revenge and to kill Askeladd, but he doesn’t like the violence, as much as he partakes in it. I think what’s numbing him to killing people is the trauma of having watched Askeladd kill his own father. He’s actually really heartbroken and sad over his dads death, but conceals it with anger and desire for revenge.
