  1. So, Akechi. Very complicated individual. We know he's in high school. Recently turned 18. And apparently he met Shido about two and a half years ago. So when he was like 15 or 14. In that range. During the main story, we can definitely see moments where Akechi is obviously trying to gain information in some way. But his confidant is the opposite of that. He isn't trying to get information out of Joker relating to the Phantom Thieves. They're just two people who bond over stuff. Billiards, then Akechi takes Joker to a cafe he goes to often, then a Jazz club he's never shown anyone else, then an arcade where he "jokes" about taking him out but also expresses his desire to be a hero, then a bathhouse where he opens up about his mother and how he hates his father. Rank 7 is interesting to me. So we'll save that. Rank 8 is where he finally lets out some of the emotions he's kept inside and duels Joker. Where he tells him that he hates him and gives him his glove on the premise that they'll fight again for real one day. Now, here's the thing, a lot of people see Akechi say that to Joker and just take it at face value. But I don't think it's that simple. Lemme explain.

The plan to take out Joker is that the police are supposed to capture him on a certain date. Which is why the calling card can't be moved. The plan that Akechi and Shido have relies on the fact that Joker is supposed to appear defeated and take his own life. That's how it would cause the least amount of questions. Which is why Akechi's rank 7 is so interesting to me. Akechi, knowing that his plan relies on tricking Joker until November 20th, decides to tell Joker to join him as partners and they'll do things together. Just to abandon the rest of the team. Yup. Akechi tells Joker to run away with him and they'll be partners. It isn't something that leads to a bad ending or a way he's trying to trick Joker. It's Akechi literally deviating from the plan to give Joker an out. I personally think that was Akechi's final chance to convince Joker to drop everything and leave. Because he enjoyed his company and knew that if they continued down this path, he would have to do what he had to do. Akechi always has a guard up. He always has walls up. He never gets too close to people. But Joker is the first person he lets some of his walls down for. Someone he lets in. But Akechi also knows what he has to do. So he instead closes himself off.

If you hate someone, you don't take them out to hang, you don't invite them to the aquarium, you don't compliment them about how unique and special they are, and you certainly don't ask them to run away with you. I think Akechi sees himself in Joker. But he also sees in Joker what fate has denied him. Happiness. Friends. People he can call family. He hates how easily Joker can just do what he can't. And it conflicts with his desire to be friends with Joker and the looming doom of what he's going to have to do. So rather than sort any of those complicated emotions out, Akechi just lumps it all together as hate and keeps moving forward.
