They're Calling Them "Palworld Killers" Now.. | New DokeV Info!

I can’t express enough how labelling games “x killer” does not help whatsoever. That said, I hope DokeV comes back.

  1. I don't really have any opinions about the "x killer" mentality, because I don't care about how children choose to sling mud at each other.

Regarding the number of voices in this space – I'm stoked. For a niche genre like this one, I think the more voices, the better; even content creators that stir up poop still influence the algorithm, so other monster taming content creators get more traffic, and I'm optimistic that people like you, Ed, will benefit from that – and in turn, the community benefits.

Final Fantasy 14 is introducing a new limited job, the Beastmaster job, that I think is going to be introducing creature collection/monster capture gameplay, and I really credit the recent success in this general genre (as a whole) for making that a reality. Content creators like you lead the charge in that sort of thing. I think it's great.

  2. Just my 2 cents, but in terms of terminology, or rather slang: we have “game-likes” when a title homages or is mechanically similar to a foundation title. Considering we have other language such as “life-span” and “dead/death” referring to game development (or “development hell”) and player engagement. It’s not that far of a stretch that game-killer would be used in gamer lexicon to represent a new title going toe-to-toe on the sales chart. Most games are about solving puzzles or obstacles by way of “combat” of some kind. Solely picking on the term “killers” seems like a moot point when compared to the whole of the gaming industry/ medium. The negative connotations are undeniable. But it’s part of gaming culture at this point. When you compare it to hip-hop, or punk, comics or manga, cinema etc. is it really all that different?

  3. "palworld killer" lmao, while this term for thing is stupid, if something comes out that truly good enough to make nobody ever want to play palworld again ill be thoroughly impressed

  4. Marketing a game as an "X killer" can actually hurt the success of the game. Two Worlds was marketed as a "Oblivion Killer", but it fell below expectations. Haze was marketed as the "Halo Killer", especially since it was exclusive to the PS3, but that also flopped. There were also many, many MMOs that were touted as "WoW Killers" that had small surges of popularity, but died down after launch. While most of them never really died, the ones that did turn out okay usually had something that made it stand out on its own instead of just being a "WoW Killer".

  5. I don't normally share my opinion online, as it most often feels like shouting into a void. In this case I will say however, that it seems to me that anyone who has to label a new title as a 'killer' of a different title is not someone who is coming from a place of good faith or interest, but it comes from a place where they want the prior title to fail. In this case, the person responsible likely is someone who hates Palworld or the success it has had, and they want to see it harmed in some way. By spreading the idea that a new title will 'kill' an older title is merely projecting one's own feelings about the prior game, and reveals very little about their interest in title they are 'advertising'. That's my take on it.

  6. i feel as if we need more monster catching games like palworld because its more like a game of pokemon than pokemon because when we watch the show we want to feed hug and love our small and large friends but some of us want to be the bad guy with a heart of gold and the 1% wants to kill everything palworld lets us do all of that and with friends

  7. Game Wars, Console Wars, actual Wars, "Pokemon" Killers, "Palworld" Killers… all of them are dumb names. So, yeah. I'm done with all of those phrases. I mean, did everyone ever find the "WoW Killer"? I don't think they have.

Even with all of that said: This DokeV game… doesn't look similar to Palworld at all. The artistic design is far too different.

  8. No game will ever kill pokemon, pokemon is the biggest franchise there is. The killer term is stupid, just play it if its good, you can play multiple games at the same time 😅😅

  9. Oh lord, here we go again…
Can we please stop using the term "[X] killer?" All it's ever done is drag games down because it gives people unrealistic expectations and ensures some people automatically dislike the game like you said.

  10. I really hate the use of the phrase/term "game 1 will be the game 2 killer" b/c it just causes needless drama and comparisons between the two. Both games can exist together just fine.

  11. I mean, honestly, can you even imagine how TERRIBLE the Industry would become if the corporations acted with the same mindset as these people throwing out "X-Killer" all over the place???

On a different note, two things I REALLY find cringey to the extreme are people using "Chef's Kiss" and using "Chad" as a description…

  12. It's pretty funny that Palworld has received enough notoriety that it's now the game to beat in the eyes of idiots on the Internet.

What's really dumb is that Palworld doesn't care if people keep playing it because the game's not a live service. They don't make more money if people keep playing so they don't care.

I hope DokeV reappears soon. Palworld shows how much of a market there is for monster taming games.

  13. I just had a silly idea. Instead of a shiny variant, you have "chad" and super rare "gigachad" variants. XD The chad will be a fancier version of the normal one and gigachad will be like the super buff decorative one. The image I had in my head as an example was like a peacock with eh, fairly typical tail feathers. Chad would be like an ideal version of a peacock with massive beautiful tailfeathers and a gigachad peacock would have like two sets of gorgeous tailfeathers and long beautiful eyelashes or something. XD (Fabio the peacock. XD )

In monster form, I guess it could be like if we pretended Rayquaza had a simpler snake form. Then the normal Rayquaza would be the chad form. And Mega Rayquaza would be the gigachad form. lol

  14. I agree. People love to pick a side. We see it in sports. People are fans of a team rather fans of a player since teams are shuffled around constantly. We see it in politics. I don't care if you are Republican or Democrat, if you think Biden has done a good job in any way then you have your head up your … We see it in food. Pineapple on pizza debates. People love to pick a side and feel like they are part of a group. Humans are social creatures. People love frats and those are just party, friendship clubs.

So yeah calling anything a game ender is just rooting for the demise of a game. People just want to be part of a team.

  15. I see this a big detriment. specially against palworld. the game is a bunch of bought assets and stolen models from a company that likes ai art (and are copying hollow knoght now) while dokv is very well done and original. Not because something makes a lot of money its good. And using only money as a objective to reach is very sad. Palworld did well because its a meme, if you want to fight a meme you create a meme. Put realistic out of place guns on those kids and made it possible to shoot not only the monsters but the people and you will be a palworld killer. But I don't believe this is what they want to do. So they shouldn't come with something as comparing themselves as somethign that is very out of what they are doing. Its just self destructive.

  16. I just want to say – if I see Pokemon killer" in relation to a new similar genre game, I get excited. Yes, yes, show me new games of a genre I adore! I jumped for joy when I learned about TemTem!

  17. DokeV seems different enough that it wouldn’t be competing with other monster taming games. But why not play or support multiple monster taming games if you like them rather than pit them against each other?
