There are many stories where Earth and humans do not do well at all.
I have problem with people who talk smack about stories, let's see what you can write.
The problem is, alot of these stories are a.i. generated, and no one is writing them. They churn these srories out and then fling them against the wall,to see which ones will stick, to troll for views. And they do it on an industrial scale

Explain why there wasn't a boarding party. Explain how the race would know about the skirmish if there wasn't a signal by the scout ship sent out – There was no mention of a signal having been sent. – and it was the only one that was there.
If Humans were already a space faring race – Even if limited in that regard, we'd be classified as such. – with knowledge of other races, how is it we'd not have more than just one ship to provide defense.
Also, at what point in the mind of any governmental bureaucracy, would anyone with a rank lower than that of a Colonel or 1-star be placed in command of a ship with the possible fate of all Humans hanging in the balance? (I get that it is fantasy/sci-fi, but that's still a very naive approach when there is no actual basis for it.)
