Theme: Experience God’s encounter.
Text: Genesis 28:13-15.
God has multiple and diverse ways of meeting us. But like Jacob, when we feel very alone, we find out we’re not alone. A sense of fear or failure may cripple our faith and belief and draw us in on ourselves, but God encounters us right in the midst of that fear and failure. When we feel most abandoned, overwhelmed, helpless, encircled by the darkness of a night of terror, God may meet us. He meets us not only when we feel that everything is going well when we join others in the cult or are immersed in an exciting activity. God meets us when we are away from home, away from ourselves with fear and beset by dangers. Recall Jacob, who at the lowest level of desperation had the greatest encounter with God.
