The Yin & Yang of Gerry Lopez | Patagonia Films

From award-winning documentary filmmaker, Stacy Peralta comes Patagonia’s The Yin & Yang of Gerry Lopez, a film that lifts the veil on one of surfing’s most enigmatic heroes. While “Mr. Pipeline” is famously known for his calm demeanor in the tube, Gerry built his early career on cutthroat, aggressive surfing. Gerry is as radical as he is Zen; he transcends categorization. He’s one of the most influential surfers and surfboard shapers of all time, an entrepreneur, a family man, a movie star, and a lifelong yogi who brought surfing to new frontiers. His influence on modern surfing is immeasurable, and his story is being told in full for the first time.

  1. I know exactly what ya ment about Bali how it felt so familiar I said in my first trip here with about 16 friends from down south in western Australia I could live here, and have done for the last 22 years.

  2. Absolutely incredible film! Was already loving it and then recognised Stacey Peralta’s voice asking the questions and realised that’s why it was so good was because he directed it 🩵

  3. Amazing documentary, Gerry is an awesome talent and an inspiration to the few of us who want to ride until we are old and brittle. I love how he has remained the most down to earth person. Stacy’s filmmaking is hypnotic, I was locked in until the end. ❤

  4. Stacey Peralta took it to another place on this documentary and I've seen him grow and develop as a filmmaker and I'm truly impressed. Excellent film and definitely one of the best docs I've ever seen and no one has seen as many documentaries as me so that's really saying something for me.

  5. So saying someone has yin and yang is the very dualistic polarity that the concept aims to overcome. Yinyang is one. One moment and one truth. But mind is always in past tense and dualistic, hence yin and yang. Just pointing out the obvious typical bs…

  6. "Yin-Yang", "Yoga", "All Gods are equal"…There IS a PRICE to be paid! I've been a surfer for nearly 40 years but it wasn't until just about 20 years ago I truly learned "the meaning/purpose of life". I no longer look upon creation to define my purpose in life, my purpose in life is to glorify the Creator who has made EVERYTHING possible. "Everything" didn't come from a "Big Bang" or "Nothingness"; to believe that is akin to intellectual suicide. Find YOUR purpose in life but don't neglect the source of such life which common sense asures you is real. There are MANY "counterfeits" of the best selling book of all time but there exists only ONE "written Word" to this day despite EVERY attempt to quiet it and keep it from you. Isa 55:11 "So will My word be which goes out of My mouth; It will not return to Me empty, Without accomplishing what I desire, And without succeeding in the purpose for which I sent it." Be careful of listening to spirits other than those of God and don't allow yourself to fall into idolatry (creating a false God in an image suitable for you). Enjoy life, "party/ride-on", and get every enjoyment you can from every moment; but, DON'T mock God and don't take for granted He who gives you the very breath of life. Respect.

  7. Wow!!! There’s a lot of really cool things to watch on YouTube, but in my opinion this has to be the absolute coolest. Gerry is a living treasure. Excellent documentary of perhaps the most inspirational individual, from his humility to his honesty and wisdom. This is something I want to watch with all my children. I could watch this over and over again

  9. This portrait of Mr. Lopez captures the quiet confidence, and his subtle grace of claiming priority in the line up all bite no bark. I had 3 connection s with this film, first wave ever circa late 70's Waikiki. Yoga training improved surfing and philosophy and used headphones for surfing with music. I wonder what tunes he had on that tape??
