The Truth About Unicorn Overlord on Nintendo Switch | A Potential RPG GOTY Contender?

Unicorn Overlord is the latest release from Atlus and Vanillaware, but does this new title live up to the high standards set by these two gaming powerhouses? I’m here to delve into that question, breaking down everything you need to know about Unicorn Overlord. Join me as we explore what this game has to offer, the aspects you may love (or not), and all the essential details that shape this new release.

Liberate Your Kingdom, Reclaim Your Destiny
From the masterminds that brought 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim and Odin Sphere, ATLUS x Vanillaware presents the rebirth of tactical fantasy RPG. Fight against fate and embark on a royal adventure to regain your reign alongside trustworthy allies.

Unicorn Overlord combines the timeless tactical RPG genre with overworld exploration and innovative battle system for a unique epic fantasy experience in the iconic Vanillaware style.

Key Features:
¡ Traverse a vibrant world, assemble units and direct them into exquisitely animated battles
¡ Perform heroic deeds and grow renown throughout the five nations
¡ Cultivate a grand army with over 60 unique characters, from humans and elves to massive beasts and heavenly angels

UNIT CUSTOMIZATION
Players can customize their party as they see fit, recruiting allies from different backgrounds.

BATTLEFIELD: STAGE
Within each battle stage, both sides will fight to take each other’s command posts in thrilling real-time combat. You, the commander, must keep a close eye on the situation, making critical decisions like which units to send when or where. Victory is secured once you’ve clear certain conditions, such as defeating the enemy general.

BATTLE
Individual battles begin when your units make contact with the enemy during a battle stage. Coordinate a unit’s tactics in advance with conditions that determine how and when skills will automatically be used. Balance your allies’ classes and skills to form the strongest units for any situation!

KINGDOM OF CORNIA
Located in the center of the continent, Cornia claims fertile fields, a powerful military force, and the largest acreage of land out of all five kingdoms. The lords of the kingdom hold great loyalty to the royal family, and Queen Ilenia’s name is sacred to her subjects.

  1. Thanks for watching, liking, and subscribing! Are you excited for Unicorn Overlord from Atlus and Vanillaware? This is another video where I went with no script and figured, see what happens!

  2. Are they sending out review codes? I'm curious what people will say about the full version rather than the demo that we all have access to. It really does seem like a no-brainer day one purchase… although it seems like most Atlus RPGs (and Sega RPGs) end up on Game Pass, which makes me want to wait! (I know we're on a Switch channel, but I tend to like playing RPGs on a traditional console. The option is nice to have, but it seems like I just end up with the Switch docked playing RPGs anyway!)

  3. I'm torn on this one. I enjoy Vanillaware games, but turn based tactics games are hit and miss for me. Not sure which this will be. I might have to try the demo and see if it hits or, well, misses. Either way, appreciate the review.

  4. I had to Pre-Order the PS5 Collector’s Edition of Unicorn Overlord after playing a sizable amount of the Demo! I’ve never played a Vanillaware Title, so I’m very excited to jump into the foray! 🦄

  5. I want to get it but I still have way too many strategy rpgs to finish. I still haven’t finished fire emblem three houses and triangle strategy. This is definitely going on the wishlist though

  6. As excited as I am about this game, thinking that it has any chance at all for GOTY is pretty much insanity. This is a very niche title by a smaller dev known for niche titles. While I think it will still do well & will have a devoted fan-base….that fan-base will be in the minority & the game will not garner nearly enough attention to be GOTY.

  7. It definitely feels like the spiritual sequel to the ogre battle games. I never understood why square enix never remaded or even brought the older ones over to old vc or even switch online. With that said the rouge class is stupidly broken.

  8. As much as I love tactics games like this one, the month of March is already taken for my first JRPG love FF7 Rebirth lol. And April will probably be reserved for Dragons Dogma 2. This one will come after those two 😅 Damn, this year is turning out to be pretty great for gaming! Also really hope they release it on PC as well for playing on my Steam Deck (I don't have a switch and kinda don't want to get it on Playstation)
