Posting this here so it’s more accessible than a replies section, since I know there’s gonna be confusion: yes, Mojang stated that the sniffer is an “ancient mob that players can find and bring back to life” in the time leading up the the mob vote where it was chosen. This basically confirms the sniffer is from a bygone period in Minecraft’s world’s history. It’s less of a actual function or time mechanic than it is a lore reason, which is why they’re only a recent addition. Just like how netherite is so rare and obtained form ancient debris is because Piglins mined all the original netherite ore already by the time we show up.
