Dear Juror,

It is during these harrowing times, on a night blacker than any other, that I earnestly request your service. A certain book has encroached upon our repertoire of dark tales, namely, of the Resident Evil type; my friend, a renowned “Scholar”, has deemed this book a black sheep of sorts, a drab tale slithering among those that we so cherish. But no story can evade the eyes and ears of The “Scholar”, who insists that the story’s vapidities require our judgment. I am inclined to agree!

Hence, the book will be tried on multiple accounts of narrative heresy! Its name is “Resident Evil: Underworld”.

Juror, will you help me exact justice upon this alleged heretic?

If so, I’ll see you soon. I will assume the role of judge, and will also prosecute and defend as necessary.

Some of my judgments may land on the defendant’s brothers and sisters, as I cannot be expected contain them indefinitely. Yes, a more critical, unadulterated shade of me may show itself tonight.

  8. Excellently timed and honest analysis! I adore little Beggy, total Daria vibes.
    You’re absolutely spot on about character depictions and how they represent entire themes or archetypes.

    My only saving grace with Trent’s illusive perspective and contrived exposition is that he’s the only source of leadership and direction for this “resistance” and only leader that can combat institutional government corruption, which the games never really offered or explored though it’s a constant theme and struggle. Like Deep Throat to Fox Mulder in X-Files.

    But Clive O’Brian from Revelations definitely rings closest to calling Trent’s persona, which was a mentor figure to Chris and Jill and withheld greater information for their safety amid an industrial conspiracy.

  13. I 100% feel you with second wall breaks. They're lazy and they destroy suspension of disbelief. Harlan Ellison is one of my favorite authors, and one of his most famously stories is Repent Harlequin Said the Tick Tock Man, and the story was already very derivative, and he needlessly makes it even worse by directly referencing 1984 in the story. It was very amateurish for a writer of his calibur.
