Great Reaction Guys!!! This is in my top 3 Sy fy movies of all time!! I love that you guys Really get into the discussion of the movie. Keep up the great reactions!! 👍🏿
First here's the basic rundown everything starts with a story called. Who Goes There that inspired the movie The Thing From another World wich was based on that original story. Then John Carpenter made his version of The Thing this movie but John Carpenter tried to stay. True to the original story Who Goes There as much as possible. That's the key difference between the movies when they made the movie The Thing from another World. They deviated from that story quite a bit from what I understand. But I can understand why an I don't blame them because when The Thing from another World was made the special effects and Technology. Was less advanced so a shape sifting alien would of been not possible to make.
Now some of the things I learned from the Shout / Scream Factory Collector's Edition of The movie. From audio commentaries an bonus features I don't remember what I got from what because. It seriously has a hole separate disic just for bonus features an some are like a hour long. So if anyone loves or likes this movie you need to get the Shout/Scream Factory Collector's Edition of The movie. Because you are looking at hours of bonus feature not including audio commentaries.
First let's start with this movie would not have been aloud to be made. The way it was if it was made today because of something called safety regulations. Meaning that anything that put the actors in danger or harms way would not be allowed. Now here's why everything you see the actors do in the movie they actually did it. Like for example those where real flamethrowers on there backs an they really used them. Now that would not be allowed today because flamethrowers are not the safest things in the world. Let's just say one small leak or puncture anywhere then you have a big boom. Basically the actors were walking around with an using potential bombs onther backs. That's why when the military use them the Soldiers with flamethrowers where always alone with no one around them. Just in case that way if the flamethrower exploded it only would kill one person. Then the torches where actually road flares wich burned toxic chemicals. So that would not be allowed because obviously breathing in toxic chemicals is bad for your health. Then when McCready throws the Dynamite after the blood test. To blow up the one alien outside Kurt Russell actually throw a real stick of dynamite. So actors handling real explosives would not be allowed today. So as you can tell things are alot safer today for actors and actress. But that being said the actors have a blast playing with the flamethrowers in this movie. They even played a prank an made it look like one of them got serious hurt with one. Let's just say John Carpenter didn't find it funny.
Now more specific facts first they filmed the Norwegian base last. Because it was the base that they filmed the movie in for the Americans so. After they set it on fire an blow it up wich they actually did because it was in the middle of nowhere. They used it for the Norwegian base. Let's just say it was not the safest location to get to as well they kind of almost died driving up to it. Let's just say steep icy Road an no guard rails so basically the bus almost slid of the road an they almost fall to their deaths. Doesn't that sound like a fun movie to work on almost falling to your death. On the way to the shooting location then breathing in toxic chemicals. Then walking around with potential bombs on your back an throwing real Dynamite.
That dog from the start was a wolf dog so it was in its natural environment. They also just had it run through the snow to it location then. They filmed the Norwegians shooting an trying to kill it then they but it together after. Every one liked the dog an it got along with every one in time. But the hander made it perfectly clear that if it's ears went down. Every single person was to stop what they were doing and not move or say anything. Because because something was freaking it out an since it was a wolf dog the ears going down was the only worning sign. So that meant stop everything an wait till it relaxed because wolf dogs are basically 90% wolf. So they are more uncomfortable and more dangerous than any other dog breed. But luckily nothing really happened an no one got hurt the dog liked every one an they liked the dog.
Stan Winston did the practical effects for the dog transformation in the dog cage or kennel. Because the main practical effects person was busy with everything else. To the point that he technically never left the set whatsoever. I mean he only left because he needed to be hospitalized for a little while due to overworking himself. But after that he started to leave at the end of the day like every one else. Now in the scene when the head comes of first there was a an I'm not kidding. On the audio commentary I believe they said there was a cartoon like fire ball. Basically when they made the body when the thing comes out of the chest. They used alot of things that made a lot of flammable Vapors so you add fire to that. Then you get a quick hug flash of fire in the air no one was hurt but once again. Doesn't this sound like a fun safe environment to work in. But the buddy was set on fire but luckily they made a backup one. Now here's how they did the tounge thing with the head on the ground. They basically started with the tounge already attached then they showed it reversed. So what you think is the tounge going out is in reality the tounge flailing around as it is going. Back into the head an because wrap up inside it. It's a common thing in movies they shoot things an show it in reverse. Like for example in the movie Home alone when Kevin is almost hit by the van same thing. They filmed it with Macaulay Culkin standing in front of the van an the van going in reverse.
Now when it came to the look of the thing John Carpenter. Basically went to the head of the special effects team an said here's the idea. It's about a shape sifting alien now get to work so he did some drawings and showed them to. John Carpenter an he said can you actually poll this of he said yea them John Carpenter said okay let's do this. It's not word for word but it's basically the just of the conversation between the two of them.
But seriously this stuff is just a small example of the things. You can learn from the Shout/ Scream Factory Collector's Edition of The Thing. So I hope any one that finds these facts an things interesting will if they can get the Shout/Scream Factory Collector's Edition of The Thing. Because for what you pay you more than get your money's worth with all the extra bonus features an audio commentaries. That's why if I like a movie I try to get a Shout/Scream Factory Collector's Edition of it. Because they go the extra mile for bonus features including exclusive bonus features sometimes. Along with reversible case covers with different cover art an in the case of My Bloody Valentine the original. It came with the theatrical release an the uncle version of the movie. Same thing with John Carpenter's original Halloween the new 4k release. Has the movie in 4k an on Blu-ray it has the theatrical release an the TV version of the movie. On the Blu-ray an the bonus features are on the Blu-ray.
Along with they also filmed a scene that shows McCready. Being tested an he is human an he I forgot the west of it but it shows he was human. They filmed it an went na let's not use it an destroyed it as far as I know because I never seen it anywhere.
Hey guys…this is my favorite sci-fi horror movie…glad you enjoyed it! I agree, greatest monster movie EVER!
I should probably clarify that my knowledge of how dangerous flamethrowers are. Comes from things I seen on TV years ago about military history an technology. One of those TV shows was called Mail Call it was hosted by R. Lee Ermey. So I kinda get my information from multiple sources on multiple things.
But yea put simply if you really like a movie it's worth it to get the Shout/ Scream Factory version of it. Because of all the bonus features it's also not hard to find them I basically get mine from Walmarts or Best Buys websites. Then they sometimes do things like release how to put it. Okay like for some time the only version of the movie Krampus 2015. That was available was the theatrical release version. But then Shout /Scream Factory made an released Krampus the naughty cut it's basically the directors cut. But it was not available until Shout/ Scream Factory made it an released it. Then you can get movies from their own office website an get extra things with your order like a movie poster for that movie.
There is a reason I put Shout/ Scream Factory that is it's one company. But two different departments Shout factory is the department that does the non horror movies. Then the Scream Factory department does the horror movies. Basically the only real difference is when the it loads one has Shout factory show up on screen. The other has Scream Factory show up on screen but both departments. Do the same thing but with different kinds of movies an TV shows. For example I have several of there horror movies from Scream an TV show like the entire season of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, Transformers Generation 1 an Beetlejuice the animated series from Shout. So they do more then just horror movies they do non horror an TV shows as well.
But yea if I am looking for something I always see if they made a version of it. Because I clearly love finding out behind the scenes information. Like for example I don't know if you ever heard of this movie but Phantom of the Paradise 1974. But it turns out they had to deal with several legal issues just to even start to film the movie. Then one before they could even release it because someone just so happened to open an name a record company. The same name that was in the movie even tho the movie was written an made before. The real record company was made so they had to change the record company's name in the movie before releasing the movie.
