  1. Devindra calling the movie safe or meaningless and putting that on Nintendo's shoulders is a little short sighted. Especially in the context of the pure trash storylines from Illumination's Minions and Sing movies, their trailer team cut better stories out of their chaotic beautiful messes of cinema. Amazing art but it keeps the stereotype of kids movies needing to talk down to their audience. While the Mario games are for all ages and a constant challenge for their players while pushing the medium to new heights. In that way this movie is totally off the mark.

  2. It was a cartoon. Not an animated feature, not a “hey parents & kids will love it” they made a 90 minute Saturday morning cartoon for kids…also this will be able to be enjoyed in almost every language across the world (that’s why they made the plot like the games). Everyone’s criticism is 1000% spot on, but I have a feeling Nintendo got EXACTLY what they wanted with this

  3. Jeff, THANK you for ranting about “Bros” pronunciation. I had to unsubscribe from another podcast (never this one!) because they kept saying “Warner Bros” instead of “Brothers.” They did it so much at first that I thought, “huh, maybe they’re being ‘ironic’.” No, no they didn’t. Over and over… citing the studio even when it wasn’t necessary. Each time, I felt my inner ears bleeding with contempt.

People! Is it reeeeeeally so hard?

Anyhow. Thanks. My therapist won’t even let me bring it up anymore. At long last I feel a sense of closure. You healed me, limerick man. You healed me.

  4. Don’t really agree with Jeff on his take on the Italian stereotypes here. I agree that it’s certainly ridiculous and would be considered offensive if it was a ton of other cultures/groups. But it’s pretty easy to find other cultures that can be portrayed in a ridiculous stereotypical way and it being OK. It’s basically all the ones that are not perceived as being marginalized in some way by the West. That includes almost all of western europe, of course the US, Australia, etc. You could also have a ridiculous French character who chain smokes between his various infidelities while smelling like cheese and no one would care.
