Europe’s history is marked by a contrast of darkness and brilliance. Originating with the influential cultures of ancient Greece, it has been a beacon of intellectual, artistic, and scientific advancement, fostering minds like Aristotle, Michelangelo, and Einstein, and cultural phenomena from Beethoven to the Beatles. However, it has also witnessed relentless internal conflicts, only uniting against common foes. It wasn’t until the Enlightenment and the French Revolution that a unified vision of Europe, based on values of freedom, equality, and fraternity, began to emerge. Post-Second World War, Europe enjoyed an unprecedented era of peace and prosperity, reaching a zenith with the fall of the Iron Curtain in 1989, fueling hopes of a permanently united continent. However, this unity is now being tested, with the rise of nationalism and events like “Brexit” indicating a possible shift in the collective European identity.
